Liberty League Lacrosse 2014 Preseason Coaches' Poll

Rensselaer (RPI) was selected as the preseason favorite in 2014 in a vote of the league's head coaches. The Engineers received 79 points and six first-place votes. William Smith, with 69 points and one first-place vote, was picked second. St. Lawrence, with one first-place vote, was third, while Union, which also had one first-place vote, rounded out the top four.

The William Smith College lacrosse team was voted to finish second in the Liberty League in 2014 by the league's head coaches. Two-time defending conference champion Rensselaer was picked to finish first this season.

St. Lawrence was voted third and Union was picked fourth. The Herons, the Saints and the Dutchwomen each received one first place vote. Vassar was picked fifth followed by RIT, Clarkson, Skidmore, Rochester and Bard.

William Smith returns 13 players from last year's roster, including IWLCA third team All-American junior Rachel Hughes (North Hunterdon/Annandale, N.J.) and all-region selection junior Katie Sipple (Fayetteville-Manlius/Fayetteville, N.Y.). Hughes led the Herons with 56 ground balls, 31 caused turnovers and 41 draws in 2013. She also contributed offensively with four goals and three assists for seven points. Sipple finished last season tied for 23rd in the nation in assists (44) and first in the Liberty League and 25th in the country in assists per game (2.59). She scored 28 goals for 72 points and picked up 16 ground balls.

In 2013, the Herons posted a 10-7 overall record and a 7-2 mark in the Liberty League. William Smith earned a berth in the conference tournament for the second year in a row.

The Herons will open 2014 on Saturday, March 1, when they travel to play a non-league game at St. John Fisher at 1:00 p.m. William Smith will host Cortland on Wednesday, March 5 for its first home contest at 4:00 p.m.
