W&L's St. Laurent Named First Head Coach at Ohio Northern

LEXINGTON, Va. Ohio Northern University has announced that it has tabbed current Washington and Lee assistant men's lacrosse coach Nat St. Laurent to serve as the first head coach for the Polar Bears lacrosse program.

St. Laurent will remain as the Generals' assistant coach through the 2014 season and will begin his work at ONU immediately thereafter, recruiting for ONU's program debut in 2016.

"My family and I have thoroughly enjoyed our time at Washington and Lee University, it has been a great five years," said St. Laurent. "I would like to thank Jan Hathorn for all the support and leadership she has provided. It has been great working along side of Coach McCabe. He has been a great mentor and friend. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with other terrific assistant coaches such as Chuck O'Connell and Kevin Kiley. Finally, I would like to thank all the players and parents I have been able to interact with during my time at W&L. It has been a great ride and I am excited for this season!"

St. Laurent is in his second tour of duty as an assistant coach with the Generals' men's lacrosse program. He previously served as a volunteer assistant coach for W&L in 2009, before taking the head lacrosse coaching position at Ferrum following the season. He recruited players for a first-year program in 2009-10 before returning to W&L for the 2011 season as offensive coordinator.

Over the last two years, St. Laurent has helped the Generals to a pair of appearances in the ODAC title game. The 2013 team tied the school record for wins in finishing 16-4 overall. W&L fell to Roanoke by a goal (10-9) in the ODAC Championship game, before receiving an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament and advancing to the second round.

"Nat is an outstanding coach and an even better person," said W&L Head Coach Gene McCabe. "He has helped return our lacrosse program to national prominence and we are extremely grateful for all that he has given, and will continue to give, to Washington and Lee and our lacrosse program through the 2014 season. The lacrosse program at Ohio Northern University has tremendous potential. We are very excited for Coach St. Laurent and his family. We know he will achieve great success in his endeavor."

Prior to his experience at W&L and Ferrum, St. Laurent had been an assistant lacrosse coach at VMI for three seasons (2005-08), helping steer the Keydets to a conference postseason berth for the first time and helping direct one of the top offenses in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.

During his time in Lexington, St. Laurent also served as a special education teacher at Enderly Heights Elementary School (2005-06) and Waddell Elementary School (2007-09). He is also a member of the U.S. Army Reserves, garnering recognition as the Soldier of the Year and Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year.

St. Laurent earned a bachelor of science degree in unified elementary and special education from Keuka College, where he was a member of the lacrosse team. He also attained a master of arts in educational leadership and policy studies from Virginia Tech in 2009.
