Catamounts Top Raiders in Season Opener

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Vermont defeated Colgate, 14-11, in the 2014 season opener Saturday afternoon at Virtue Field. Sydney Mas, Vanessa VanderZalm and Jessica Roach combined to score 11 goals to pace the Catamounts. With the victory, Vermont moves to 1-0 on the season, while Colgate drops to 0-1.

Mas (5 goals) and VanderZalm (3 g, 2 ast) tallied a game-high five points apiece, while Roach added three goals and an assist. VanderZalm also led the team with six ground balls, six draw controls and four caused turnovers. Megan Ark paced the Raiders with four goals and one assist and Alison Flood chipped in three goals.

The Catamounts jumped out to an early lead behind goals from Roach and Mas just over a minute into the contest. Colgate responded with five straight scores, including two from Flood.

Vermont answered back with four straight tallies in the ensuing three-plus minutes to regain a 6-5 lead at the 11:55 mark of the first half.

The Catamounts closed out the first period with three consecutive goals in just over four minutes, including two from the program's all-time leader in goals, Mas. UVM took a 10-7 advantage into the half.

Ark opened the second half of play with two consecutive goals to pull the Raiders within one, 10-9. Vermont responded by scoring the next three, as Justine Allen, VanderZalm and Roach each picked up one score apiece.

Colgate pulled within two goals of Vermont with 5:14 to play, but Erica Estey tallied an insurance score on a man-up opportunity for UVM as the Catamounts closed out the 14-11 victory.

Meg Hopkins tallied her first career win in net for the Catamounts after making 12 saves in 60 minutes of play. Jennie Berglin collected 12 saves in the losing effort for Colgate.

The Catamounts hit the road for their next game on Saturday (Feb. 22) at Marist at 1:00 p.m.

BURLINGTON, Vt. Junior Megan Ark had a good start to the 2014 season with four goals, but the Raiders dropped their opener, 14-11, at Vermont on Saturday.

Colgate (0-1) got four goals from Ark with three coming in the second half, while Alison Flood recorded a hat trick. Taylor Fischer and Monica White netted a pair of goals as well. Jennie Berglin stopped 12 shots in net and picked up five ground balls.

Jenna Frost had one of her best games in her Colgate career with seven ground balls and seven caused turnovers to lead the Raiders on the defensive side.

Vermont (1-0) was led by Sydney Mas with five goals with each coming in the first half. Vanessa VanderZalm and Jennie Roach each posted hat tricks. Meg Hopkins also pushed aside 12 shots in front of the cage to earn in the win.

The first half was all about runs for both sides. Vermont started with an early 2-0 lead with Mas scoring the first of her five in the first half. Colgate answered with a five-goal run to take a 5-2 lead with 24:12 remaining in the first half. Flood led the charge with a pair of goals and Ark tallied the opening goal of the year for the Raiders.

Vermont answered with four-straight goals to regain the lead at 6-5 and Mas was once again leading the way with two of the four goals. The teams traded goals over the next four minutes with White and Fischer each tallying their second goals of the game.

The Catamounts pushed ahead in the final minutes with three-straight goals to take a 10-7 advantage into halftime. Mas continued to find the net with two more goals, while VanderZalm added her second of the day.
