Hobart Falls to Siena in 2014 Season Opener

GENEVA, N.Y.-Hobart senior Alex Love scored twice and became the 14th Statesman to notch 100 career goals. However, Siena defeated Hobart 12-7 in the Statesmen's season opener played today on a snowy Boswell Field.

Senior Cam Stone led Hobart with three points on a goal and two assists. Senior Jake McHenry scored twice and sophomore Cooper Stefaniak chipped in a goal and an assist. First-year Jake Shapiro scooped up a team-high four ground balls. Senior goalie Peter Zonino finished with 11 saves in goal for the Statesmen.

The Saints (1-1) picked up their first win of the season. John Barlow led Siena with four goals. Rob Hunter and Kyle Curry each scored twice and added an assist. Colin Clive notched two goals, while Richie Hurley and Conor Prunty each added a goal and an assist. Casey Dowd won 15 faceoffs and picked up a game-high 10 ground balls. Tommy Cordts came up with 11 saves for the Saints.

Siena scored the first three goals of the game with Curry, Barlow and Clive finding the back of the net in the first 6:15. With 7:17 left in the first, McHenry put the Statesmen on the board with a man-up goal after an assist from Stone. Hunter stretched the Siena lead to three with 1:40 left in the opening quarter.

Curry struck again to start the scoring in the second quarter. McHenry answered with his second goal of the day a little over a minute later, off an assist from junior Brendan Saylor, to make it 5-2. Back-to-back unassisted tallies by Hurley and Clive gave the Saints a 7-2 lead with just over 10 minutes before the break. With 9:08 left in the second, Stone sent home a shot after a pass from Stefaniak to make it 7-3. Three minutes later, Barlow found the back of the net off an assist from Matt Bellucci to give Siena a five-goal lead. With nine seconds left in the second, Stefaniak scored to make it 8-4 at the break.

Just 27 seconds into the third quarter, sophomore Matt Opsahl drilled a shot into the back of the net after a feed from Stone on a man-up situation to get the Statesmen within three. However, Siena scored four unanswered goals to finish off the third and start the fourth quarter to take a 12-5 lead. With 11:13 left in the game, Love notched an unassisted tally to make it 12-6, and he struck again with 9:34 remaining for his 100th career tally.

The Saints finished with a 39-26 advantage in shots, while Hobart held a 22-21 edge in ground balls. Siena dominated at the faceoff X winning 15 of 23. The Saints were successful on 17-of 19 clear attempts, while the Statesmen finished 17 of their 23 attempts. Hobart went 2 for 4 on extra man opportunities, and Siena finished 1 for 2.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Feb. 22, when they travel to play No. 16 Cornell at 1:00 p.m.

Freshman attack Jordan Barlow netted his first four collegiate goals including the game-winner as the Saints beat Hobart 12-7 at Boswell Field in Geneva, N.Y. Red-shirt sophomore goalie Tommy Cordts made 11 saves in posting his first collegiate win as the Saints earned their first victory of 2014.

Siena (1-1) scored the first three goals and led throughout while out-shooting the Statesmen (0-1) 39-26. Leading 8-5 early in the second half, the Saints rattled off four unanswered goals two of which came from Barlow to put the game away.

Barlow scored on four of the five shots he took, while senior midfielders Kyle Curry and Rob Hunter each added three points on two goals and an assist. Junior faceoff specialist Casey Dowd won 15-22 faceoffs and picked up 10 groundballs, while line mate Ryan Mallon caused four turnovers and secured three groundballs.

Alex Love and Jake McHenry led Hobart with two goals apiece and Peter Zonino made 11 saves.

The Saints continue their season-opening five-game road trip Saturday at noon at Binghamton.
