Heinig's Late Goals Help W&J Top Thiel

GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Kyle Heinig scored three goals in his collegiate debut, including a pair in the final 4:05, to help Washington & Jefferson open its men's lacrosse season with a 10-8 victory at Thiel Saturday at the R-S Dome at Alumni Stadium.

The Presidents (1-0) won their season opener for the second-straight season. Heinig and Tim Angell both netted three goals for W&J.

Washington & Jefferson and Thiel (0-1) were tied 2-2 in the first quarter until John Bursch scored three seconds before the period ended on an extra-man opportunity. Chase Bennett assisted on the goal.

Sean Loney tied the game for the Tomcats early in the second quarter, but W&J responded with three consecutive tallies. Angell's third goal of the second quarter came off an assist from Heinig 33 seconds before halftime and the Presidents took a 7-4 advantage into the locker rooms.

Carmen Papa delivered the only two goals of the third quarter to bring Thiel to withing 7-6. After a Zachary Fredericks' goal for the Presidents made it a two-goal edge once again, Mike Bryant fired in two goals four minutes apart to tie the game with 6:35 left.

Papa hit the post with a shot at the 5:05 mark which would have given the Tomcats the lead and Heinig followed with the eventual game winner a minute later. The W&J defense held TC without a shot during an extra-man chance that started at the 3:51 mark and Heinig scored again one second after the penalty ended.

Heinig finished with five points (3g, 2a), while Angell also added an assist. Fredericks produced two goals and one assist and Max Kroll netted the Presidents' other goal. Conor Crowe made 13 saves in the net for the Presidents, who were outshot by a 33-29 count. W&J scored on 3 of 7 extra-man chances. Bennett finished with a career-high 13 ground balls.

Bryant and Papa both had four-point games (3g, 1a) to lead Thiel. Ryan Weldon turned back seven shots in the setback.
