W&L Opens Season with Overtime Win vs. No. 16 CNU

LEXINGTON, Va. The Washington and Lee women's lacrosse opened the 2014 season with a 12-11 overtime victory over No. 16 Christopher Newport on Sunday at Wilson Field.

After CNU (0-1) scored a game-tying goal with five seconds left in regulation, the game entered overtime, where senior attacker Margaret Klein (North Andover, Mass./Brooks) registered the go-ahead goal with 18 seconds left to play for the win.

The Generals lit up the scoreboard first with a Klein goal just 3:32 into the game. The Captains answered with a goal of their own by senior attacker Ashton Marshall (Round Hill, Va./Foxcroft School). Both teams went goal for goal the rest of the half before first-year Corinne Wood () notched her first collegiate goal with 25 seconds left to play to give the Generals a one-goal lead heading into the intermission.

Klein opened the second half with her third goal, which gave W&L a 7-5 lead. Over the next 27 minutes, the game featured three ties and two lead changes. Junior midfielder Sammy Yates (Phoenix, Md./Dulaney) put the Generals on top once again with her first goal coming with just 45 seconds left to play. On the Captains ensuing possession, first-year attacker Meaghan Galvin (Arlington, Va./Yorktown) was awarded a free-position shot that led to the game-tying goal and forced overtime.

For the game, the Generals held 28-19 advantage in both shots, 28-19, and draw controls, 16-11.

In goal for the Blue and White was junior Cara Mulligan (Glen Ridge, N.J./Glen Ridge), who collected six saves. Sophomore Hanna Slough (Henrico, Va./Mills Godwin) recorded 10 saves for the Captains.

Klein paced the Generals with four goals, one groundball and three draw controls. Wood and senior attacker Greta Witter (Houston, Texas/The Hill School) each notch two goals apiece, while Taglienti notched a game-high three assists. Senior defender Leanne Stone (Darien, Conn./Darien) first-year defender Lindsey DeMuth (Baltimore, Md./Bryn Mawr) led the team with three caused turnovers each. Stone also grabbed a game-high five groundballs, while sophomore midfielder Caroline Hutchinson (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) tallied four.

For CNU, first-year midfielder Erin Callahan (Vienna Va./James Madison) and sophomore attacker Kylie Chaplin (Oak Hill, Va./Chantilly) led the offense with three goals each. Galvin added two goals, while senior attacker Jessica Singer (Herndon, Va./Herndon) notched two goals and one assist. Galvin also posted a game-high nine draw controls.

W&L returns to the field on Wednesday when it travels to St. Mary's for a 3:00 pm contest.
