Hampden-Sydney Season Opener at Mary Washington

FREDERICKSBURG, VA Hampden-Sydney opened their season on the road with an 18-9 loss at Mary Washington on Sunday afternoon.

UMW's Billy Kelly scored the first goal of the contest at 13:12, but the Tiger's Abbot Wallenborn (Crozet, VA/Western Albemarle) answered quickly with a score of his own just 21 seconds later. The Eagles' Griffin Burke and Luke Dick scored the next two goals to go ahead 3-1 at the 9:11 mark.

Neither team would score again until freshman Duncan Morris (Charlottesville, VA/Christchurch) scored his first collegiate goal at 5:19, but Mary Washington's Chris Garcia found the back of the net with 24 seconds left in the first quarter to maintain a two-goal lead, 4-2, after 15 minutes of play.

Morris scored just under five minutes into the second frame to draw within one, but from there it was an Eagles takeover. Mary Washington held the Tigers scoreless until there was 52 seconds left in the third. In the meantime, UMW scored the next eight goals to take a commanding 12-3 lead.

Morris had an impressive debut for Hampden-Sydney, scoring four goals on five shots to pace the Tigers offense. Thomas Armstrong (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Latin) contributed a goal and two assists, and Wallenborn pocketed two scores. Ned Bowden (Crozier, VA/Collegiate) forced a game-high four turnovers while David Noftsinger (Richmond, VA/Collegiate School) stopped 10 shots in the cage.

Billy Kelly notched seven goals for Mary Washington, John Bohlinger had three scores and four assists, and Luke Dick posted three goals and two assists. Johnny Esposito won 15 of 20 face-offs, and Jared Golden went 5 for 10.

Mary Washington held a 29-20 advantage in ground balls, a 16-20 margin in turnovers, outshot Hampden-Sydney 44-23, and won 20 of 30 face-offs. The Tigers fared well in extra man situations, going 2 for 2 on their EMOs while limiting Mary Washington to a 1 for 5 output.

Hampden-Sydney returns to the field on February 26 for their home opener vs. Catholic University at 6:00 pm on Hellmuth-Pritzlaff Turf Field.
