American Holds off Campbell in Home Opener

Alex Lugovina scored four goals and Jessica Wojciechowski registered her first career hat trick to lead the American University lacrosse team to its first win of the season, 11-9, over Campbell on Sunday afternoon.

Campbell (0-2) struck first with three straight tallies in the first 10 minutes before Wojciechowski added her first of the day with an unassisted goal. The score sparked the Eagles' offense as American added five unanswered goals to close out the half with a 6-3 lead.

American (1-1) went up 7-3 at the start of the second half on Lugovina's third goal of the day just five minutes in. Erica Hitch ended the Eagles' streak less than a minute later but Lugovina found the back of the net again off the feed from Madison Hoon.

The Camels made it a one-score game, 8-7, on a 3-0 run but Wojciechowski completed her first career hat trick with 14 minutes left for the 9-7 American advantage. Loren Day answered for Campbell 30 seconds later to cut the Eagles' lead to one again.

Jamie Silverman and Hoon scored back-to-back goals to put American up 11-8 with under five minutes to play. Day posted her fourth goal a minute later to put the score at 11-9 but the Camels were unable to find the back of the net again to give the Eagles its first win of the year.

Wojciechowski finished with a career-high five points, also adding a pair of assists in the win. Emily Maher notched two assists and led American with three ground balls. Lugovina, Olivia Mangan and Silverman tallied three draw controls apiece and Maher also finished with two caused turnovers for the Eagles. Jackie Ferri made nine saves to earn her first career win.

Day led Campbell with five points on four goals and one helper. Cloey Henchcliffe posted a team-high three draw controls and Brittany Kincer made 13 saves as the starting goalkeeper.

American held a 14-9 edge in draw controls and 12-6 advantage in ground balls collected for the game. The Eagles also had a 39-12 advantage in shots.

The Eagles head to Baltimore, Md. next to take on UMBC on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 4:00 p.m.
