Lady Knights Drop Season Opener to Lenoir-Rhyne

Laurinburg, NC- The St. Andrews University women's lacrosse team was defeated 19-2 in their season opener to Lenoir-Rhyne University (NC) on Sunday afternoon.

LRU, an NCAA Div. II team that won their conference, the South Atlantic, last season jumped on the Lady Knights early scoring four goals in under 5 minutes. They then ran the score to 10-0 in just ten minutes before SAU called a timeout.

St. Andrews would finally get on the board in the 14th minute on a goal by senior attacker Jackie Jones before going into the half down 13-1.

St. Andrews' defense would pick up in the second half, however, as they would hold the Lady Bears to just 6 goals all half while senior midfielder Catherine Lovallo would score SAU's second goal of the game 12 minutes into the second half.

SAU would have five different players cause turnovers on the day while Lovallo led with 3 draw control wins. Leading in ground ball control were sophomores Anastasia Schultz and Tyreeka Johnson with four apiece while freshman defender Joelle-Sara Prata recorded three.

Junior goalie Blake Forkner recovered after a shaky start to record 10 saves on 29 shots and hold LRU to just 6 goals in the 2nd half.

LRU was led by Jamie Ryan's four goals and Claire Wach's three while Wach also won five draw controls.

St. Andrews will next remain home to host conference rival Reinhardt University (2-1) on Saturday at 1:00 pm at Knights Field.
