Catawa Falls 13-5 at at Mount Olive

MOUNT OLIVE, NC-- Mount Olive scored three goals in the final 97 seconds of the first period, and the Trojans pulled away for a 13-5 victory over visiting Catawba in non-conference lacrosse action on Monday afternoon at Amon Field. The Trojans improve to 2-0, while the Catawba Indians drop their opener.

Daniel Shields and Matt Shields scored four goals apiece to lead the Trojans in their home opener. Catawba got three goals from Steven Ridolfo (Charlotte, NC/Providence/Gettysburg).

Mount Olive took a 2-0 lead after goals by Matt Shields and Cameron Walsh. Catawba cut the lead in half on Ridolfo's goal with 3:20 left in the first period.

Jake Hancock's goal with 1:37 remaining triggered a Trojans' scoring spurt. Stephen Bowlan followed with a goal with 38 seconds left and Matt Shields closed out the first period scoring with eight seconds remaining to give Mount Olive a 5-1 lead.

Catawba rallied early in the second period with a pair of goals 58 seconds apart. Adam Hebert (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic HS) scored just 18 seconds into the period and Tyler Ulrich (Ephrata, PA/Ephrata HS) added a goal with 13:44 left to pull the Indians within 5-3. After that, Mount Olive would hold Catawba without a goal for nearly 24 minutes of playing time as it took control.

Daniel Shields and Jesse Mitchell scored in the final three minutes of the first half to extend the margin to 7-3 at the break. Matt Shields and Daniel Shields added the first two of the second half to up the lead to 9-3. Ridolfo ended the draught for Catawba with 5:12 remaining in the third quarter, but the Trojans put in three more before Ridolfo tallied his third midway through the fourth.

Catawba will next entertain Tampa on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. for its home opener at Shuford Stadium.
