No. 17 Simon Fraser Rebounds, Overpowers Boise State

BOISE, ID (February 16, 2014) Following a one-goal loss to No. 4 Brigham Young the day prior, No. 17 Simon Fraser showed no signs of fatigue, instead taking out their discontent on Boise State, overpowering the Broncos by a final score of 27-5 to claim their first PNCLL Divisional match-up of the 2014 season and improve to 2-1 on the year.

Thirteen different Clan players registered points in the win with midfielder Sam Clare (Ladner, BC/Vancouver College) - 6g and attackmen Tyler Kirkby (Burnaby, BC/Burnaby South Secondary) - 5g and Iain Vickars (Burnaby, BC/Burnaby South Secondary) - 4g, 2a, factoring in on 16 of Fraser's 27 goals.

SFU's starting defensive unit of LSM Riley Wanzer (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak HS) - 10gb, and close defenders Bayne Bosquet (Coldstream, BC/Kalamalka Secondary) - 3gb, Mark Hilker (Bowmanville, ON/Clarington Central Secondary) - 5gb, and Alex Thomson (Coquitlam, BC/Gleneagle Secondary) - 3gb, also played a prominent role in shutting down the Boise State offense, pushing the ball in transition and combining for 21 groundballs on the day.

Simon Fraser's Clare opened the scoring early in the contest, with BSU senior Karson Fullmer (Clarkston, UT/Sky View HS) tying the game at 1-1. The two teams wouldn't stay close for long, as Vickars scored his first of the game on the man-up, followed by long pole Alex Thomson cashing in on a scramble in front of the Boise State net, and then Vickars again at even strength to force a Bronco timeout with SFU leading 4-1.

A stretch of end-to-end action would ensue, but after calling a timeout of their own to settle the play down, Kirkby would capitalize on another Clan man advantage to extend the SFU lead to four a 5-1. Boise State midfielder Adam Smith (Mission Viejo, CA/Tesoro HS) would excite the home bench with his first of a team-high three goals to narrow the score to 5-2.

The Clan would once again prevent the Broncos from gaining any momentum as sophomore attackman Lyndon Knuttila (Maple Ridge, BC/Thomas Haney Secondary) - 2g, 2a scored his first of 4 points to close out a strong first quarter and put Fraser in control by a score of 6-2.

The Clan would refuse to let Boise State gather any footing in the second period with Clare once again initiating the scoring with his second of the game, followed by sophomore midfielder Chris Pond (Penticton, BC/Princess Margaret Secondary) to extend the SFU lead to 8-2.

Fraser would continue a stretch of seven unanswered goals with sophomore Andrew Branting (Duncan, BC/Cowichan Secondary), Kirkby and Clare putting SFU ahead 11-2 at the half. The Broncos would be held off the scoresheet in the second frame with Clan senior goaltender Darren Zwack (Sherwood Park, AB/Archbishop Jordan HS) making 7 of 10 first half saves to lead the shutdown defensive effort with a save percentage of .833.

Freshman goaltender Jeremy Lashar (Burnaby, BC/Burnaby South Secondary) would take over the Simon Fraser net to start the third quarter, backstopping another dominant period for the Clan as SFU outscored Boise State 8-3 in the frame to extend their lead to fourteen at 19-5 after 45:00 minutes.

Ward Spencer (Saskatoon, SK/Evan Hardy Collegiate) capped off the 7-goal run, with Bronco attackman Brian Scott (Mill Valley, CA/Tamalpais HS) finally putting a stop to the bleeding for Boise State at 12-3. The Clan and Broncos would continue to trade third quarter goals by Clare then Smith for BSU, until Fraser midfielder Travis Hayes (Dublin, CA/Dublin HS) once again broke open the scoring and kick started another SFU offensive outburst that saw a 6-goal run put the Clan ahead 19-4, with Smith adding one more for the Broncos to end the quarter.
