Mount Olive Spoils Catawba's Season Opener

SALISBURY, NC -- Visiting Mount Olive spoiled Catawba's lacrosse opener, taking a 12-1 win at Shuford Stadium on Thursday afternoon. The Trojans outscored the Catawba Indians 9-0 in the second half to improve to 2-0. The Lady Indians are 0-1.

Riann Daziel scored the first of her three goals to put the Trojans up 1-0 after six minutes. The Lady Indians tied the contest at the 17:49 mark of the first half on a tally by Kim McConnery (Welland, Ontario, CANADA/Notre Dame HS/Monroe CC). Mount Olive used goals by Michelle Scannell and a second from Daziel to take a 3-1 lead at the break.

Penalties hurt Catawba in the second half as Mount Olive pulled away. Four of the first five Trojans goals in the second stanza came on free-position shots. The Trojans posted three goals in the opening 10 minutes and added three more in a span of two minutes to lead 9-1 with 14:14 left.

Katie McGovern also had three goals for Mount Olive. Scannell and Candace Conklin each scored twice, while Michelle Fortier had a goal and two assists. Meredith Jones (Barnesville, MD/St. John's Catholic HS) picked up an assist on the Catawba goal.

Mount Olive held a 30-14 edge in shots. Hannah Knight recorded four saves for the Trojans and Bethany Davis (Salisbury, MD/Parkside HS) posted 13 saves for the Lady Indians.

Catawba is back in action at home on Saturday morning, hosting Saint Leo at 10:30 a.m.

SALISBURY, N.C. - Riann Daziel scored three goals for Mount Olive as they beat Catawba, 12-1, on Thursday night in non-conference lacrosse action.

Daziel scored the first goal of the contest with 24:07 to give Mount Olive (2-0)the advantage. Kim McConnery scored the tying and lone goal for the Indians (0-1) with 17:49 left in the first half off the Meredith Jones assist.

The Trojans scored two more goals in the opening half coming from Michelle Scannell and Daziel; Michelle Fortier had the assist on both goals as Mount Olive never let Catawba see a tie again.

In the second half Mount Olive added nine more goals to the board as six different Trojans registered a goal. Katie McGovern had three goals for her second career hat trick in a row in a Trojan uniform. Candace Corkin had two goals at 21:41 and 14:14 remaining in the game. Alysha Kulka (26:43), Fortier (10:41), Daziel (1:29), and Scannell (14:58) all recorded one goal apiece.

Defensively for the Trojans, Fortier and Gina Fader both had a team high four ground balls of the team's 25 total. McGovern and Kayla Mergl both led the team with two turnovers caused. Kulka also had the team high in draw controls with three.

Hannah Knight had four saves on the night on five Indian shots.

Mount Olive out shot Catawba 30-14. They also made their free position attempts count as the Trojans went 4 for 8 on the night whereas the Indians went 0 for 4.

The win is the second straight for the Trojans following a 21-4 win over Chowan back in early February.

Mount Olive returns home to host Conference Carolinas opponent Erskine in their conference opener at Amon Field on Saturday. Match time is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
