Newberry Doubled up at Presbyterian in Season Opener

CLINTON, S.C. - A pair of Wolves scored two goals each as senior Kerri Ann Barlage and sophomore Noelle Allen each struck twice in Newberry's 16-8 loss to Presbyterian on Thursday at Old Bailey Stadium.

The Division I Blue Hose (1-0) struck first in a little over two minutes into the game, but the Wolves (0-1) quickly answered back when Barlage (Glen Burnie, Md.) scored 35 seconds later. Presbyterian rattled off three-straight, before sophomore Jessica Baxtrom (St. Leonard, Md.) scored on a free position shot to pull the Wolves within two.

Newberry saw the Blue Hose score a pair of goals following Baxtrom's strike before sophomore Alexis Cathcart (Spartanburg, S.C.) netted her first goal of the season.

Cathcart's goal was followed-up five minutes later by sophomore and First Team All-SAC Preseason selection Carly Marksberry (Lawrenceville, Ga.), who scored an unassisted goal with 13:48 left in the first period. Trailing 8-4 with 8:34 remaining in the period, Allen (Lawrenceville, Ga.) struck from the free position, before Barlage scored her second of the game with the Wolves a man-up.

Barlage's goal was the Wolves final score of the opening half, as the Blue Hose headed to the locker room with a 10-6 lead.

Presbyterian scored three goals in the opening 16 minutes of the second half to push the lead to 13-6.

Newberry's seventh goal came with 13:25 remaining in regulation when Allen scored off a free position opportunity. The Wolves' final goal of the day came when junior Tessa Davis (Triangle, Va.) ran unmarked to the goal mouth and beat the Presbyterian keeper. The Blue Hose notched one final goal in the final nine minutes to secure a 16-8 win over the Wolves.

Baxtrom finished the day with one assist, while also notching a goal, to join Barlage and Allen as Newberry's two-point players on Wednesday.

Barlage was joined by junior Victoria Thomas (Manhattan, Kan.) and senior Ashante Grimes (Columbia, S.C.) with two ground balls on the day, while Thomas controlled four draws for Newberry.

Freshman Karissa Dodson (Glen Burnie, Md.) started in her collegiate debut on Wednesday. Freshmen Niky Van Ohlen (St. John's Fla.), Maddie Campbell (Hilton Head Island, S.C.), Katie Thompson (Newark, Del.) and Olivia Knight (Spartanburg, S.C.) all made their collegiate debut against Presbyterian, while redshirt freshman Ajahna Grosvenor (Lawrenceville, Ga.) and sophomore Gabrielle Ciavolino (Bluffton, S.C.) wore the scarlet and gray for the first time as well.

Newberry next sees action on Tuesday at SCAD Savannah in Hardeeville, S.C., with first draw set for 5:00 p.m.
