Queens Dominates Spartans in Teams' First Meeting

CHARLOTTE, N.C. Queens hosted Tampa this evening, defeating the Spartans, 17-5, in their first meeting in program history. The Royals improve to 2-1 with the win, while the Spartans drop to 0-2 in their first season of play.

Freshman attacker Abigail Paulus led the Royals in points for the second game in a row, notching two goals and two assists. Junior attacker Jena Ready tallied three points with two goals and one assists, while Brittany Barnwell, Brittany Larranaga and Maggie Masters each totaled two goals. Larranaga also tied with Kelly Dowd to lead Queens in draw controls as each recorded three. Danielle Horoschak took the win in goal tonight after collecting seven saves in the opening half of action.

The Royals wasted no time today getting on the scoreboard as Ready put the ball in the net 18 seconds into play. Paulus then followed suit with a goal of her own 30 seconds later. UT's Morgan Cheripko would score a goal at 27:36 to get the Spartans on the board, but Queens responded with a scoring clinic that featured eight straight goals from the home team.

Trailing 10-1, the Spartans found a goal at 13:22 from Maggie Griffo to hold off the running clock, but a pair of goals from Larranaga and Megan Wagner would spoil their plans as Queens went ahead 12-2. Koertney Goebel then scored the first goal of her career at 2:24 to give the game a 13-2 score at the break.

A number of Queens' newcomers would see time in the second half with the Royals holding such a large lead. Among them was freshman midfielder Alexandra Bruder who scored the first goal of her collegiate career with a minute left to play in regulation. Her goal would be the final of the game.

Queens outshot UT 31-22 and won the battle for ground balls, 20-11. The Spartans won the draw control battle, 14-10.

Five different players scored each of UT's goals. Emilie Barbosa led in points with two after also notching an assists. Cheripko led all on the field with six draw controls.

The Royals will be on the road for the first time this season on Tuesday at No. 10 Pfeiffer University. The game is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
