Presidents Open Home Schedule with Victory over Bethany

WASHINGTON, Pa. -- Washington & Jefferson outshot Bethany 48-14 and cruised to a 13-3 non-conference men's lacrosse victory on Friday evening at Alexandre Stadium in the Presidents' 2014 home opener.

The Presidents are now 2-0 for the first time in school history. W&J led just 1-0 after 15 minutes of play, but fired in the first three goals of the second quarter to claim a 4-1 halftime advantage. The first-quarter goal came as time expired when Max Kroll slipped a shot past BC goalie C.J. Studnicky.

In the second quarter, John Bursch, Tim Angell and Kyle Heinig scored four minutes apart for the four-goal lead.

Washington & Jefferson netted four unanswered goals to start the third period and the Presidents ran away with the victory. Jake Bow capped the spurt with his first collegiate goal.

Heinig and Bursch both scored three times to lead W&J. Heinig added two assists to start his collegiate career with back-to-back, five-point efforts. Angell finished with two goals, while Bryan Whipkey scored once and dished out three assists.

Conor Crowe made four saves in 42 minutes of action before Jacob Succop (two saves) took over. The W&J defense forced 38 Bison turnovers and the Presidents won 11 of 18 faceoffs.

Bethany fell to 0-1 despite 17 saves from Studnicky.

Washington & Jefferson looks to stay unbeaten on Wednesday when it hosts Franciscan at 6:00 pm.
