No. 1 Colorado State Escapes No. 12 Grand Canyon

Palm Desert, CA Colorado State kicked off their 2014 men's lacrosse season with an 8-6 victory over #12 Grand Canyon on a gorgeous Friday evening at the Hovley Soccer Park in Palm Desert, CA. The Rams fell behind 3-1 early in the contest before scoring seven straight goals in the third game of the Lax Coaches vs. Cancer tournament.

Grand Canyon held the momentum early, notching three goals in the first 9:30 of the game. But senior attackman Kacy Carter (Rock Canyon HS; Douglas County, CO) took over, scoring each of the game's next four goals to push the Rams ahead. CSU led 4-3 at halftime, 6-3 after three quarters and 8-3 before Grand Canyon made a late push to keep the game close at the end.

The Rams defense stood strong after GCU's initial onslaught, holding the 'Lopes off the scoreboard for nearly 45 minutes of game time. The senior goaltending duo of Jack Regan (Sunset HS; Beaverton, OR) and Koltin Fatzinger (Wheat Ridge HS; Thornton, CO) were outstanding, ringing up 16 total saves in the victory.

GCU had success facing off, winning 12 of 18 draw attempts in the contest. But the Rams poured on the shots in the crucial middle portion of the game, taking 24 in the second and third quarters to only nine for Grand Canyon. The Rams outshot GCU 37-32 on the evening.

Carter's four goals tied him for game high honors with GCU attackman Dean Fairall, who also tallied four goals on the game. Senior attackman Sean Smith (Amherst HS; Amherst, NY) had three assists while junior midfielder Jack Curry (Langley HS; Langley, VA) scored his first career goal in the win as well.

Colorado State moves to 1-0 on the season with the win. Next up for the Rams is a game against #8 Oregon on Sunday morning. The Rams and Ducks haven't faced off since 2008 and Oregon is coming off a lopsided loss to #4 BYU on Friday evening.
