Mercer Overtakes Richmond in Fourth Quarter

MACON, Ga. -- Richmond held its second halftime lead of the year, but Mercer held the Spiders scoreless in the fourth quarter in a game with seven lead changes to win 11-7 in the Atlantic Sun Conference opener for both teams Saturday in men's lacrosse at Mercer University Stadium. The win pushed the Bears to a 2-2 mark, while the Spiders are 0-3 in their inaugural season.

Freshman attack J.P. Forester (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) tied for the game-high total of three goals, while sophomore Brad Burnam (Nedrow, N.Y.) had two goals and an assist for Richmond.

The game went back-and-forth through three quarters, with teams trading goals until the Spiders took their first lead at 3-2 on Burnam's first goal of the game.

Mercer took back the lead with a pair of second quarter goals, but Richmond got a man-up situation and sophomore attack John Atkinson (Garden City, N.J.) scored to the tie the game at four and freshman Mitch Goldberg (Damascus, Md.) found the back of the net with three seconds remaining in the half for the 5-4 lead.

The Spiders attempted 25 first-half shots, limiting the Bears to just 14.

Mercer scored two quick goals in the third to retake the lead, but Forester and Burnam scored within two minutes of one another to put the Spiders back in front 7-6.

Mercer's defense clamped down on Richmond in the fourth, aided by winning five of the six faceoffs in the period, and scored all five fourth-quarter goals in the frame to take the contest.

Freshman Benny Pugh (Powhatan, Va./Woodbury Forest School) played his first full game at goalie, making a career-high nine saves in the loss. He is now 0-3.

The Spiders will remain on the road with a game next Saturday at UMBC at 1:00 p.m.

Richmond returns home to Robins Stadium on Tuesday, March 4 at 4:00 p.m. against Holy Cross.
