Boston U. Falls in First PL Game, as No. 15 Lehigh Rallies

BOSTON - Boston University gave No. 15 Lehigh a scare in the Terriers' first-ever Patriot League game, but the Mountain Hawks rallied from an early deficit to defeat BU, 10-7, on Saturday afternoon at Nickerson Field.

BU (0-3, 0-1 PL) led Lehigh (4-0, 1-0 PL), 4-2, early in the second quarter before the Mountain Hawks scored seven straight goals to take the lead for good. This was the first time BU faced a ranked opponent and it was the closest margin of defeat this season. Saturday also marked the first time that BU led a team at the end of a quarter.

Freshman Christian Carson-Banister was spectacular between the pipes for the Terriers, as he made a season-high 16 saves. He stopped all five shots he faced in the fourth quarter as BU held a team scoreless in a quarter for the first time this season.

The Terriers' offense was led by freshman Adam Schaal, who scored two goals. Freshman Pat Myers had a goal and two assists and four other Terriers found the back of the net. Three players - sophomore Sammy Davis and freshmen Sam Talkow and Craig Zebrowski - each scored their first collegiate goals while redshirt freshman Sam Tenney tallied his second goal of the season. Zebrowski also added an assist along with classmate Clay Phillips.

Myers gave BU its first lead of the season just 1:35 into the proceedings when he dodged a defender and found the top corner from in close on Lehigh goaltender Matt Poillon (10 saves). Ryan Buttenbaum responded eight seconds later when he won the ensuing faceoff, raced down the field and scored.

Lehigh made it a 2-1 game with 12:13 left in the quarter before BU battled back with two straight goals from Schaal and Zebrowski to take a 3-2 lead into the second quarter. Schaal scored his second of the game just 26 seconds into the second stanza to make it a 4-2 lead before Lehigh scored six consecutive goals to take an 8-4 lead into halftime.

After a Chris Appell goal gave the Mountain Hawks a 9-4 advantage with 5:26 to play in the third quarter, Tenney converted an extra-man opportunity with an assist from Myers to make it 9-5 with 4:51 left. Alan Henderson put Lehigh back up by six, 10-4, to close the third quarter.

Henderson's goal was the Mountain Hawks' last of the game, as the Terrier defense and Carson-Banister combined to hold Lehigh scoreless in the final 15 minutes. Davis began the comeback attempt with a goal at the 3:52 mark of the fourth quarter off a feed from Myers. Talkow made it a 10-7 game five seconds later when he won the ensuing faceoff and finished the play himself.

The Terriers held Lehigh to just eight shot attempts and killed two man-down situations in the final quarter. BU caused 10 of the Mountain Hawks' 16 turnovers and collected 25 ground balls. Talkow was 10 of 17 at the faceoff X and has six ground balls. Sophomore Elliott Burr was 2 of 4 on faceoffs and was one of 14 players with a ground ball.

BU will be back in action on Tuesday when the Terriers travel to Providence for a non-conference contest. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.

BOSTON - Lehigh used a 7-0 run bridging the second and beginning of the third quarters to win its fourth straight Patriot League opener as the Mountain Hawks topped Boston University 10-7 on Saturday. Junior Patrick Corbett and sophomore Reid Weber scored two goals apiece as Lehigh improves to 4-0 for the first time since 1997.

"I want to credit BU for playing a great game today," said Lehigh head coach Kevin Cassese. "They really showed up and took it to us for a good part of the game. They won the first 20 minutes and the last 15 minutes of the game. Fortunately for us, we were able to win 25 minutes towards the middle part of the game and that proved to be the difference."
