Robert Morris Topples Titans in Home Opener

Moon Township, Pa. Feb. 23, 2014 Robert Morris opened up its 2014 home schedule with Detroit this afternoon. Behind four multi-goal performances and a dominant third period, the Colonials defeated the Titans, 11-7.

Robert Morris (1-1, 0-0 NEC) is now 5-0 all-time against Detroit (1-2, 0-0 MAAC) and earned its second victory in 365 days against the Titans. The Colonials previously knocked off Detroit on Feb. 23, 2013 at Joe Walton Stadium, 9-5.

For the second-straight contest, RMU scored the game's opening goal. Junior Jacob Ruest (Cornwall, Ontario/The Hill Academy) and sophomore Luke Laszkiewicz (Oshawa, Ontario/Westminster Prep) successfully executed the hidden ball trick as Ruest ripped a shot past Detroit goaltender Chris Kelly, who was looking at Laszkiewicz.

After Ruest's tally, the Colonials and Titans traded goals for the remainder of the first quarter. Freshman Cody Nass (Vancouver, British Columbia/Delta Secondary) scored the first goal of his career to make it 2-0, but Detroit answered with a shot from Shayne Adams. With 36 seconds remaining in the frame, freshman JonPatrik Kealey (Ottawa, Ontario/South Carleton) scored on the fastbreak, but the Titans answered 26 seconds later with a tally from Adams.

Adams scored two more to start the second quarter to give Detroit its first lead of the contest. However, RMU answered with four goals in 1:20 to take a lead it wouldn't relinquish.

Sophomore James Rahe (Aldergrove, British Columbia/W.J. Mouat) started the scoring brigade with 8:37 remaining in the half. Nine seconds later, it was junior Michael Seidel (Edmonton, Alberta/The Hill Academy) getting into the action, as he picked up the ball off the face-off and ripped a shot from the right side of the arc.

Eight seconds after Seidel's goal, Kealey gathered a pass from Ruest in front of the crease and beat Kelly for his second goal of the game. A minute later, Ruest found the back of the net off a pass from Rahe to give RMU a 7-4 lead.

After Detroit responded with two goals to end the first half, the Colonials scored three unanswered and shut down the Titans' offense in the third quarter to secure the win.

Nass picked up his second of the contest off a pass from Laszkiewicz with 11:19 remaining in the third stanza, then Rahe scored just seconds later after redshirt sophomore Chris Barney (Cheshire, Conn./Bridgeton Academy) won the face-off. Less than three minutes after Rahe's tally, sophomore Eric Rankel (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) ripped the back of the net with his second goal of the season off a pass from Ruest.

Detroit picked up a goal with 6:58 remaining in regulation to pull within three, but Laszkiewicz sealed the game with 1:30 remaining as he scored on the fastbreak off a pass from Kealey.

Senior Brian Bohn (Mars, Pa./Seneca Valley) earned the first win of his career after stopped 11 of 18 shots. Fellow senior Sean Meagher (Chesterfield, Mo./St. Louis University) led all players with six caused turnovers on the afternoon.

Robert Morris travels to the east side of the state next weekend as it takes on Drexel. Saturday's contest is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start from Vidas Field.
