Robert Morris Topples Titans in Home Opener

The five goals was the second most in his career and two away from the school record he set in 2011. Senior Alex Maini (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) finished with four points on a goal and career-tying three assists, while senior Tom Masterson (London, Ont./St. Thomas Aquinas) tied his career-best with three helpers.

Junior Chris Kelly (Valrico, Fla./Saint Andrews) got the start in goal and ended with a career-best 18 saves - the third most in Titan history - and sophomore Damien Hicks (Copiague, N.Y./Copiague) won a career-high 14 faceoffs and tied his best with seven ground balls.

Detroit (1-2) saw Robert Morris (1-1) get off to a strong start in its home opener as the Colonials took a 2-0 lead nearly five minutes into the game before the Titans got on the board as Maini located Adams for his first. After another RMU goal, Adams cut the deficit back to one as his Canadian counterpart Masterson found him and he delivered with just 10 seconds left in the opening period.

Masterson and Adams would get together again early in the second to tie it up and then Maini earned another assist as Adams' fourth-straight goal, this time with the man-up, put Detroit ahead, 4-3, at the 10:09 mark.

That is when the Colonials made their first run scoring four straight in a span of 1:20 as they jumped in front, 7-4. The Titans took advantage of another RMU penalty and this time, Adams was not involved in the score as Masterson fed Maini for his 68th career marker. Adams would make his presence felt one more time before the half as he fired one in with less than a minute left to pull the red, white and blue back within one at the break, 7-6.

The comeback stalled in the third as Robert Morris added three goals in the period and kept Detroit off the scoreboard until Maini who broke the Titan all-time assist record on the play hooked up with junior Brandon Beauregard (Clarkston, Mich./Notre Dame Prep) for his third goal of the season to make it 10-7, but that was as close as UDM got.

Junior Chris Shevins (Merrick, N.Y./Mepham), sophomore Paul Bitetti (Plainview, N.Y./Bethpage) and redshirt freshman JD Hess (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm) each tallied a pair of caused turnovers, while Bitetti and seniors Troy Dennis (Baldwin, N.Y./Baldwin) and Nick Garippa (Rochester Hills, Mich./Notre Dame Prep) each picked up two GB's. Detroit also came away with a season-high 14 caused turnovers.

Detroit will now look to regroup as the Titans go back on the road to face former MAAC member VMI next Saturday, Mar. 1, with game time set for Noon.
