Mercy Stays Perfect with Victory over Ohio Valley

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Feb. 23, 2014) Junior Jesse Wood (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) continued his torrid start to the season with six points on three goals and three assists, again all in the first half, as Mercy maintained its perfect start to the season with a 17-10 victory over Ohio Valley on Sunday.

Mercy is now 2-0 while OVU drops to 0-4.

Wood again wasted no time in getting things going, notching his first point on an assist at the 13:39 mark and scoring unassisted one minute later. He would go on to post five of his points, including all three of his goals, in the first quarter alone and added an assist on a man-up opportunity just five minutes into the second quarter shortly before calling it a game.

The Mavericks went up 5-0 during the first quarter and led by as many as nine at 10-1 with 7:17 to play in the second quarter. Mercy again thoroughly outplayed its opponent, outshooting OVU 49-23 while holding significant edges in groundballs (43-21), turnovers (15-21), clears (.933%-.682%) and faceoffs (.667%) despite the Fighting Scots posting better numbers than the Mavericks in the fourth quarter.

Wood also caused a team-high three turnovers and registered three of the Mavericks' four team assists as a slew of young talent showcased their ability in the victory. Freshman Chris Lopez (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) matched Wood with three goals while juniors Zack Haun (West Seneca, N.Y./West Seneca East Senior) and Lucas Sarmiento (Lindenhurst, N.Y./Suffolk County CC) and freshmen Richie Morris (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and Daniel Speicher (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) each bagged a brace, with Morris adding an assist and Speicher's unassisted man-down strike proving to be the game-winner.

Graduate student Kevin Glueckert (Bethpage, N.Y./Univ. at Albany), sophomore Kyle Stockton (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) and freshman Nick Wilcox (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) each chipped in with a goal, with Glueckert and Haun sharing the team lead with four ground balls as Glueckert also went 12 of 18 on faceoffs.

Head Coach Jordan Levine and the Mavericks will prepare for a trip up I-87 to face The College of Saint Rose in the Golden Knights' season opener on Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 6:00 p.m.
