No. 17 Simon Fraser Picks up Division Win at Washington

SEATTLE, WA (February 23, 2014) No. 17 Simon Fraser counted their second-straight divisional win of the season by doubling up Washington 16-8 to improve to 2-0 in the PNCLL and 3-1 overall.

Clan attackmen Tyler Kirkby (Burnaby, BC/Burnaby South Secondary) - 4g, 2a, Ward Spencer (Saskatoon, SK/Evan Hardy Collegiate) - 4g, 1a and Lyndon Knuttila (Maple Ridge, BC/Thomas Haney Secondary) - 3g, 1a, factored in on ten of the Clan's 16 goals, taming a physical Husky squad that now sits at 0-3 on the year.

Kirkby powered a 4-2 SFU lead after 15:00 minutes, assisting on both of the Clan's opening goals, first by fellow attackman Iain Vickars (Burnaby, BC/Burnaby South Secondary) and then Ward Spencer's first of the night, to put Fraser ahead 2-0 early in the first quarter.

UW sophomore attackman Nathan Puldy (Boulder, CO/Monarch HS) then converted a pass from freshman Sean Maier (Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge HS) to capitalize on a Husky man-up and close the score to 2-1. Puldy then drew the teams even with his second of the game to knot the score at 2-2. Next, Kirkby got in on the scoring himself, finishing a pass from Knuttila, followed by a solo effort to give the Clan a two-goal lead at 4-2.

Fraser dominated transition throughout the game, using an aggressive ride and fast break out to blow the game open in the second quarter and extend their lead to five at the end of the first half. Clan junior midfielder Casey Foster (Edmonton, AB/St. Francis Xavier) found the back of the UW net on an SFU man-up to reset the score to 5-2.

Knuttila and junior midfielder Sam Clare (Ladner, BC/Vancouver College) then scored back-to-back to complete a 5-0 SFU run and increase the Clan lead to five at 7-2. A goal by Maier on another Washington man-up would temporally stop the bleeding a 7-3, until Knuttila scored again to kick-off another Simon Fraser run heading into the break.

Knuttila, on a pass from Ward Spencer, would continue the SFU scoring streak to start the third quarter, with Spencer burying a fast break feed from junior defender Mark Hilker (Bowmanville, ON/Clarington Central Secondary) and then creating his own look to cap off a 4-0 Clan run that increased the Fraser lead to eight at 11-3.

Washington would continue to find salvation on the man-up, as the Huskies scored their third goal with the man advantage to temporarily quiet the SFU assault at 11-4. Despite the stall in momentum, the Clan would continue to pile it on for the remainder of the period, rounding out the frame with three unanswered goals, starting with senior midfielder Brendan Farrell (Milton, ON/St. Michael's College), Kirkby and then Spencer again, to take a commanding ten-goal lead of 14-4.

The fourth quarter would be marred by penalties, with SFU assessed a total of 4:00 minutes over the final frame, including 2:00 minutes in non-releasable infractions. UW would refuse to quit down the stretch, stringing together a four-goal run of their own on goals from sophomore attackman Alex Crane (Bainbridge Island, WA/Bainbridge Island HS), junior attackman Shun Yamaguchi (Kanagawa, Japan/Shonan HS), senior midfielder Rem Baumann (Lake Oswego, OR/Lakeridge HS) and then Puldy on the man-up with his third of the game to bring the deficit to within six at 14-8.

Fraser would slam the door shut over the remainder of the quarter, as freshman attack Clayton Fenney (North Vancouver, BC/Handsworth Secondary), scored the first goal of his collegiate career, followed by Kirkby's fourth of the game, assisted by sophomore Jordan Lashar (Burnaby, BC/Burnaby South Secondary), to end the game up 16-8 over the host Husky's.
