Corace Ties School Record as Catawba Tops Lees-McRae

SALISBURY, NC -- Sophomore Alyssa Corace (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) tied a school record with eight goals as host Catawba downed Lees-McRae 17-7 in lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. Corace tied the record set by Ebony Mills (Harrison, ME/Oxford Hills HS/Mount Ida) against Lees-McRae in 2012. With the win, the Catawba Indians pick up their first win of the year and improve to 1-2. The Bobcats fall to 1-1.

Meredith Jones (Barnesville, MD/St. John's Catholic) got Catawba started, scoring just 1:21 into the contest. Kim McConnery (Welland, Ontario/Notre Dame HS/Monroe CC) made it 2-0 after five and a half minutes before Corace tallied three times over a six-minute span to put the Lady Indians up 6-0 midway through the first half.

Taylor Drake (Jupiter, FL) notched the first goal for Lees-McRae at the 14:24 mark, but Corace scored back-to-back to make it 8-1. Jenah Tracy (Naples, FL) had two first-half goals for the Bobcats as Catawba led 11-3 at the break. Corace tallied six goals in the opening 30 minutes.

Katelin Rooney (Naples, FL) scored early in the second half for Lees-McRae then Catawba put in three straight for a 14-4 lead with 14:46 left. Corace netted her seventh goal at the 11:43 mark and tied the record with 6:43 to go to give the Lady Indians a 16-7 edge.

McConnery followed Corace with three goals for Catawba. Jones added two goals and two assists. Tracy picked up three goals for the Bobcats with Drake collecting two goals with two assists.

Catawba held a 36-15 edge in shots. Mia Emmerson (Orlando, FL) stopped a dozen shots for Lees-McRae. Bethany Davis (Salisbury, MD/Parkside) came up with six saves for Catawba.

Catawba will play its first South Atlantic Conference game on Saturday, hosting Brevard at 4:00 p.m.

SALISBURY, N.C. -- Lees-McRae sophomore Jenah Tracy continued her hot start to the 2014 campaign by netting a hat trick, but LMC fell into an early 6-0 hole in a 17-7 loss at Catawba in nonconference action Tuesday afternoon in Salisbury, N.C.

The Indians (1-2) amassed 36 shots, including 22 in the first 30 minutes of play. The Bobcats (1-1) forced 20 turnovers.

Catawba's Alyssa Corace recorded a hat trick in the first 14:06, while Meredith Jones dished a pair of assists.

Bobcat sophomore Taylor Drake (Jupiter, Fla.) put LMC on the scoreboard on an unassisted goal at the 14:24 mark of the first half, but LMC trailed 6-1.

The Indians offense rallied behind Corace once again while she netted two more goals and teammate Abby Moore found the back of the net to push the lead to 9-1.

Tracy (Naples, Fla.) collected a pair of goals in the final 5:56 of the first half while the Bobcats trailed 11-4 at the intermission.

Goalie Mia Emmerson (Orlando, Fla.) recorded half of her saves (12) in the first half.

Senior Katelin Rooney (Naples, Fla.) wasted no time when she blasted home a shot 78 seconds into the second half.

A trio of Indians scored a goal to give the home squad a healthy 14-4 lead.

Drake, Tracy and Kirsten English (Myrtle Beach, S.C.) bested Catawba goalie Bethany Davis to shave the deficit to eight, 15-7.

However, the Indians scored twice before the final buzzer to earn the victory.

Corace netted an impressive eight goals while racking up 16 shots, including 13 on goal.

Tracy led the Bobcat offense for the second consecutive game while Emmerson accumulated 12 saves.

LMC returns to action Thursday at 4:00 p.m. with a trip to Athens, Tenn. to battle Tennessee Wesleyan.
