Saint Leo Edges Catawba in One-Goal Thriller

SALISBURY, NC -- Visiting Saint Leo rallied in the fourth quarter to take a 9-8 win over Catawba in lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The Lions improve to 3-1, while the Catawba Indians fall to 0-3.

Adam Hebert (Charlotte, NC/Charlotte Catholic HS) gave Catawba an 8-5 lead on a tally with 13:42 left, but the Lions held the Indians off the board the rest of the way. Goals one minute apart from Matt Obermeyer and Ryan Burks cut the margin to 9-7 with 11:59 remaining.

Saint Leo used a pair of man-up situations to score its final two goals. Miles Britton tied it with 10:51 to go and Kevin Hutchinson put in what turned out to be the winner with 7:32 to play. The Indians had possession for the final minutes, but David Moore saved two Catawba shots in the final 30 seconds.

Catawba had not trailed until Hutchinson's goal midway through the final quarter. Steven Ridolfo (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS/Gettysburg) and John Scheich (Waxhaw, NC/Weddington HS) had early goals to put the Indians up 2-0. Saint Leo tied it, but Josh Reedy (Lake Mary, FL/Lake Mary HS) and Tyler Ulrich (Ephrata, PA/Ephrata HS) scored in the final 1:09 to give Catawba a 4-2 edge after a quarter.

Neither team scored in the second quarter with Britton and Scheich alternating goals in the first four minutes of the second half to leave Catawba up 6-4. Scheich and Ridolfo sandwiched goals around one from Mike Kavanagh of Saint Leo to put the Indians up 7-5 going to the final quarter.

Britton had three goals for Saint Leo. Burke had two goals and an assist. Will Cothron controlled the face-off circle, winning 13 of 19 for the Lions. Scheich had three goals for Catawba. Ridolfo had two goals with Hebert scoring a goal and handing out an assist.

Saint Leo held a slight 36-33 edge in shots with Moore making 10 saves for the Lions. Pete Wesselman (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS/Stevenson) stymied 15 of the shots from Saint Leo in goal for Catawba.

Catawba will host Brevard on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. That will mark Catawba's first South Atlantic Conference tilt.

With less than 30 seconds to play and the Lions leading by one, Saint Leo sophomore goalie Dave Moore made two clutch saves to hold Catawba off the board, securing a 9-8 victory over the Indians on Wednesday evening from Shuford Stadium. The win advances the Lions' record to 3-1 on the season, while Catawba drops to a mark of 0-3.

Leading the way for the Lions was Miles Britton, with a team high three goals on the afternoon. Ryan Burke matched Britton in overall points, tallying two goals and earning an assist. Matt Obermeyer, Kevin Hutchinson, Michael Mastracchio, and Mike Kavanagh each tallied one goal, with Hutchinson grabbing the game-winner with 7:32 to play in the fourth quarter. Dylan Yonts and Jake Kavanagh added an assist apiece to close out the Lions' scoring efforts for the day.

Will Cothron won 13 of 19 faceoff attempts, and led the team with six ground balls on the day. Defensively, Moore earned his keep, making 10 key saves on the day while facing 33 shots and 18 shots on target.

The Indians were led by John Scheich, who tallied a hat trick of his own, while Steven Ridolfo netted two as a total of seven players contributed to Catawba's final score. In cage for Catawba, Pete Wesselman logged 15 saves as he squared off against 36 shots and 24 shots on goal from the Lions.

Catawba jumped out to an early lead and posted two quick goals before Saint Leo could get on the board off of a goal from Burke with 8:37 to go in the first quarter. Mastrachio pulled the score even at 2-2 with a goal at the 7:15 mark, but two more goals from Catawba closed out the quarter with the score set at 4-2 in the Indians' favor.
