McDaniel Holds on for One-Goal Win vs. St. Mary's

WESTMINSTER, Md. McDaniel built a 13-7 lead before holding on to defeat St. Mary's (Md.) 14-13 in non-conference lacrosse action on Wednesday.

Sam Barbeito (Wolfsville, Md./Middletown) led the Green Terror (1-0) to a victory in its season opener with two goals and three assists. Maggie Quinn (Crofton, Md./Archbishop Spalding) and Danielle Entrot (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) each added hat tricks.

Christy Bishop led the Seahawks (0-3) with four goals while Shelby Newman added two goals and five assists.

After Barbeito and Newman traded goals in the first 5:29 of the game, Barbeito found Bridget Bopst (Westminster, Md./South Carroll) 30 seconds later to start a three-goal run.

Monica Parcell (Prospect Park, Pa./Interboro) added a free-position goal with 16:42 showing and Barbeito tallied her second with 14:49 to play in the first half.

Three goals from St. Mary's in a 1-minute, 32-second stretch evened the game at 4-all before Quinn started another three-goal run.

Bopst hit Quinn with 8:58 showing before Bopst and Entrot converted free-position tallies a minute apart.

Bishop finished a solo run with 21 ticks left to close the margin to 7-5 at the break.

Parcell and Julia Jacobs (Stevensville, Md./St. Mary's) scored 41 seconds apart to stretch the lead to 9-5 with 27:02 to play before Barbeito hit Entrot for a 10-5 lead 47 seconds later.

Entrot and Quinn scored back-to-back markers to make it a 13-7 lead with 14:24 to play before three Bishop goals keyed a five-goal rally that drew the visitors within one with 5:40 remaining.

Jacobs finished a solo run to stretch the lead back to two 61 seconds later before Abbey Harrison set the final margin with 2:33 to play.

Barbeito added four ground balls while Quinn added five of the Green Terror's 16 draw controls.

McDaniel returns to action at home against Frostburg on Saturday, Mar. 8. Game time is 1:00 p.m.

Westminster, Md. Sophomore midfielder Shelby Newman (Hampstead, Md./Manchester Valley) and junior attacker Christy Bishop (Glenwood, Md./Glenelg) combined for 11 points in a tough one-goal loss at McDaniel College Wednesday night. The Seahawks' rally fell short in the 14-13 non-conference setback.

Newman tallied two goals and career-best five assists for a game-high seven points while Bishop found the back of the net a game-and season-best four times.

McDaniel (1-0) notched back-to-back goals to stake a 13-7 lead with 14:24 remaining in the game. The Seahawks (0-3) then took over the game and reeled off five unanswered goals in an eight-minute span to cut the deficit to one with 5:40 to go. The Green Terror's junior attacker Julia Jacobs (Stevensville, Md.) netted the eventual game-winning goal nearly a minute later.

First-year attacker Abbey Harrison (Easton, Md./Easton) responded for St. Mary's at 2:33, closing the gap to one-goal once again as Harrison converted on a Newman feed. The Seahawks were unable to generate any further offense as McDaniel won the ensuing draw control and effectively killed the clock.

Sophomore attacker Samantha Barbeito (Wolfsville, Md.) controlled the Green Terror attack with two goals and three assists while sophomore midfielder Maggie Quinn (Crofton, Md.) and junior attacker Danielle Entrot (Ellicott City, Md.) each finished with a hat trick.

It was a tale of runs in the first half. The two teams traded the game's two goals before McDaniel scored three in a row for a 4-1 lead at 14:49. The Seahawks answered back with three consecutive goals of their own to even up the game at 11:04. The Green Terror notched the last run of the half with three more for a 7-4 lead at 3:06. Bishop pulled St. Mary's within two at halftime with a goal with 21 seconds left.
