Manhattanville Can't Stop W. New England in Season Opener

PURCHASE, N.Y. Manhattanville suffered a 21-7 defeat at the hands of Western New England in the Valiants' 2014 season-opener, held on a sunny but frigid Saturday afternoon at GoValiants.com Field.

Taylor Scialdone was the player of the game for Western New England (1-0), scoring five times and assisting on five others for a game-high 10 points. Kaitlynn Stevens and Bethany Peters both had three goals and two assists, while Jessica Scannapieco and Shelby Trebbe added four points each on three goals and an assist.

Senior co-captain Casandra Honovich (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) was the bright spot for Manhattanville (0-1), scoring four times on nine shots and adding three draw controls. Freshman Sarah Dalsey (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) had two goals on three shots in her collegiate debut, while senior co-captain Brooke Marcimo (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) also scored for the Valiants.

Western New England started the match strong, controlling the first eight draws and converting on six of those chances to take a 6-1 lead 6:17 into the contest.

As the match continued, Manhattanville managed to convert on many of their scoring opportunities in the first half, but the Valiants just didn't get enough possessions to keep pace with a persistent and potent Golden Bear attack. Scialdone had a stretch where she played a role in seven straight WNE goals, scoring four and assisting on three others.

The visitors took a 14-5 lead into the half thanks to a 23-9 edge in shots. Sophomore Caitlin Sosa (New York, N.Y./Monroe-Woodbury) managed to limit the damage by making seven saves, while WNE's Emily Castleman made two stops at the other end.

The action slowed considerably in the second half, with Western New England posting only a 12-8 edge in shots. Junior Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter) went between the pipes in the second stanza, making three saves on 10 shots.

The Golden Bears finished the game by out-shooting the Valiants, 35-17, while also posting an 18-12 edge in draw controls.

Manhattanville will return to action on Wednesday, when the Valiants travel to Kean for a non-conference contest beginning at 4:00 p.m.
