Mariano Scores 5 to Lead No. 13 Massachusetts Past Brown

Massachusetts recorded four consecutive goals to open the game and took a 4-0 lead into the final minute of the first quarter.

Cleary tallied back-to-back goals in the span of 98 seconds to put the Minutemen up by two. He scored unassisted at the 12-minute, 33-second mark for his first goal of the season and followed with another with 10:55 left on a feed from George.

Karaska earned his first point facilitating Schroeder's goal with 8:42 remaining in the frame before George helped out Whippen at the 4:30 mark to make it 4-0 UMass.

The Bears registered their first tally with 47 seconds left in the first on a Bellistri extra-man chance, but the Minutemen scored the next 11 goals to turn a 4-1 lead at the end of the first into a 15-1 advantage in the fourth.

Whippen dished it to Whiteway and the Billerica, Mass., native found the back of the net with 10:32 to play in the second to start the streak while Mariano earned his 10th tally of the year on a shot at the 3:05 mark to push the lead to five goals.

Following halftime, Sokol restarted the attack with a pass from Consoletti 2:42 into the third quarter. Mariano added three of the following four UMass tallies broken up only by Whiteway's second of the day to extend the advantage to 11-1 entering the final stanza.

Only 56 seconds into the fourth Sokol sent a shot in before George added his only goal of the game to make it 13-1 Minutemen with 12:56 to play. Mariano netted his fifth tally exactly one minute later while Robino rounded out scoring for UMass with 7:07 remaining.

The final score was reached when Lucchese scored on a Molloy assist with 6:17 left in the game.

The Minutemen led in shots, 39-28, on-target attempts, 25-13 and groundballs, 26-22. UMass finished 1 of 4 on extra-man opportunities while holding Brown to just one goal in eight EMO chances.

The Minutemen return to Garber Field in Amherst, Mass., for their next contest, a Saturday, March 8 meeting with No. 18/17 Albany at 1:00 p.m.
