Hagerman Leads Assumption to Win over Queens in Opener

Worcester, Mass. (March 1) -- On Saturday afternoon at the Multi-Sport Stadium, Assumption won its fourth straight home opener with an 18-3 victory over visiting Queens in non-conference action. This is the second straight season that the Hounds have defeated the Knights in Worcester.

Assumption jumped on top just 1:21 into the game as junior Camille Auger (Kennebunk, Maine/Kennebunk) scored off an assist from senior Lindsay Hagerman (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough) for the 1-0 lead. Senior Kathryn Beall (Shrewsbury, Mass./Shrewsbury) scored just 22 seconds later for the first of three free-position goals for the Hounds in the half. Over the next 1:51, Assumption stretched the lead out to 6-0 on a pair of goals from Hagerman and a pair of free-position scores. Sophomore Tess Anketell (Southborough, Mass./Marian) added two goals in the opening half, including her second of the game with 21:57 left, to stake the Hounds to a 9-0 edge.

Carly Chierico got the Knights on the board 11:26 into the half with an unassisted tally to cut it to 9-1, but Assumption answered 2:23 later with the first career goal from sophomore Julianna Molloy (Guilford, Conn./Guilford). She finished the game with two goals, including the first of the second half to make it a 15-2 margin less than one minute into the second. To finish the team's first half scoring, the Hounds posted five unanswered scores that included a goal from junior Rebecca Cann (Danvers, Mass./Danvers) to extend the lead up to 14-1. The Knights closed the half with a goal from Taylor Martello for the 14-2 advantage at the half.

In the second period, Hagerman added a pair of goals to cap off her five-goal day, while Beall posted one goal and one assist to finish her hat trick and a five-point afternoon. Junior Alyssa McCormick tallied an unassisted goal in the second half for her first goal of 2014 to close out the scoring for the Knights.

Hagerman led the team with six points on five goals and one assist, along with three goals and two assists from Beall. Junior Amy McNeil (Orange, Conn./Amity) posted two goals and two assists, along with two goals each from Auger, Molloy and Anketell. Sophomore Molly Brown (Manchester, N.H./Manchester Central) also added her first goal of the season and fourth of her career off an assist from McNeil.

Hagerman led the team with four ground balls, while senior Mary Guinee (Topsfield, Mass./Masconomet) had a team-best seven draw controls to go along with five from Beall. Cann had two caused turnovers to lead eight overall caused turnovers by the Hounds. Beall was a perfect 2 for 2 on free-position attempts in the game as well.

For the game, the Hounds outshot the Knights by a 29-4 margin while forcing 19 Queens turnovers. Assumption also controlled the draw controls, winning 18 of 23 on the afternoon. The Hounds won the ground ball battle, 15-7, and forced 11 turnovers on clear attempts by Queens in a dominant defensive effort. Assumption was also effective in free-position opportunities, converting on 3 of 4 chances that included a 3 for 3 showing in the first half.

Freshman goalie Jaclyn Chirco (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton) picked up her first career victory with one save over 60 minutes, while Queens goalie Kahli Evans made eight stops in the loss.

With the win, Assumption improves to 1-0 overall, while Queens falls to 0-1 on the season.

Assumption is back in action on Tuesday, March 4th as the Hounds travel to Merrimack College for the team's Northeast-10 Conference opener beginning at 6:00 p.m.
