Rhodes Wins Shootout at Birmingham-Southern

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. Rhodes women's lacrosse earned their second ever win, defeating conference opponents Birmingham-Southern College 15-13 on Saturday.

The win is the Lynx' second, as they move to 2-2 on the season and 1-2 in SAA play. The Panthers fall to 2-2 and 1-2 in league action.

There was a flurry of scoring from the onset in the high scoring contest, with the Lynx posting 10 first half goals. Tori Van Heyst got on the board first with a score at the 25:53 mark when she converted a Lindsay Gess pass to tie the game up at 1-1. Morgan Fuller scored the next two Rhodes goals, back to back and grabbing the 3-1 lead with 17:44 to play.

Van Heyst netted her second score just three minutes later, followed by two more Fuller goals to go up 6-3. Gess found the back of the net for back-to-back goals at the 9:33 mark to push the Lynx ahead 8-3. Jenny Bitzer extended the Lynx lead, converting a Gess pass to post a 9-3 lead. Allison Bruff closed the half with a goal, and helped Rhodes take a 10-6 lead into the half time break.

The high scoring affair continued in the second half as the two teams traded goals for the opening 15 minutes, including scores from the sticks of Bruff and Gess to make the count 12-8 with 14:38 to play. Van Heyst earned a hat-trick with her third goal to take a 13-10 lead with 10:14 left in the half. Gess netted her fourth score just two minutes later, pushing the Lynx edge to 12-10.

The Panthers scored three unanswered goals to pull within one at 14-13 with 5:13 left to play. But the Lynx defense held strong and Fuller scored the final goal with 26 second to play to give the Lynx the lead, and ultimate win at 15-13.

Sarah Daniels played all 60 minutes in goal for the Lynx, where she snagged six saves and got the win. BSC's Caitlyn Dryer was credited with the loss, while she did grab 10 saves.

The Lynx outshot their counterparts by a count of 31-26, but the Panthers picked up more ground balls by a tally of 26-20.

On the day, Fuller ended with five goals and four assists, leading the Lynx to the win. Gess added four goals and six assists, while Van Heyst netter a hat-trick and Bruff had two goals and an assist. Bitzer also got on the board with one goal.

Rhodes will be back on the field on March 8 as they take on Fontbonne University in St. Louis. At 1:00 p.m.
