Canisius Edges Ohio State in Home Opening Thriller

Canisius (2-2) used four goals from junior attacker Tori Quinn and 10 saves from junior goalkeeper Kayla Scully to beat Ohio State 11-10.

After Ohio State scored five-consecutive goals to take a one goal lead with just under 15 minutes to go in the game, Canisius managed to battle back to go up by one in the closing minutes on Quinn's fourth goal of the game.

The Buckeyes were then stonewalled by Scully late, coming up with three consecutive saves two off free position opportunities to seal the win for the Griffs.

"Today was a great program win," said head coach Scott Teeter. "We executed our scouting report to a T early in the game and forced them to make adjustments. Our team once again learned the key aspect of the game, which is needing to get out of the first half. In the second half, I thought our defense played phenomenal and Kayla was outstanding."

The Griffs got off to a fast start, with junior attack Meghan Cuddy scoring on the Griffs' opening two possessions, both off feeds from Quinn, to make it 2-0 just over one minute into the game. Cuddy scored three goals in the contest.

The Buckeyes would answer quickly though, as Mary Kate Facchina and Kaila Gottlick scored to tie things up at two.

After trading goals, Canisius went on a 4-0 run to give Canisius its largest lead of the game at 7-3, but Ohio State would answer with a run of its own. The Buckeyes tallied three unanswered before the half, and opened up the second frame with two more, to give them their only lead of the contest at 8-7.

After a timeout by Teeter, Quinn scored twice in four minutes to make the Griffs' lead 9-8 with 21 minutes to play. The scoring settled down late in the game, as Ohio State tacked on two more and senior Maria Kotas tallied one more for the Griffs, leaving the game tied at 10 in with four minutes to play.

Quinn broke the tie with 3:10 to play and Canisius would see its defense hold on to seal the victory.

The Griffs will now have to wait 11 days before they'll take on Louisville, March 12 at the Demske Sports Complex. First draw is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Game Notes: This was the first win in program history for the Griffs over the Buckeyes, moving them to 1-5 all-time vs. Ohio State ... Quinn has now scored four goals in back-to-back contests, and her six points today was one shy of a career-best ... sophomore Taylor Giglio's three points (one goal, two assists) is a season-best.
