No. 6 Dickinson Knocked off by Montclair State

(Carlisle, Pa.) The #6-ranked Dickinson men's lacrosse team suffered its second loss of the season, dropping a 14-11 decision to Montclair State University on Saturday.

The Red Hawks improved to 3-0 on the season behind five goals and an assist from sophomore Brett Mangan.

Montclair struck first as Joel Van Der Wal tallied, unassisted at the 10:52 mark of the first quarter. The Red Devils capitalized on a Montclair penalty to pull even as first-year Tyler Llewellyn (Cockeysville, Md./Loyola Blakefield) finished an assist from senior Will Scott (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus), with 9:20 remaining in the quarter.

The Red Hawks went on a run, scoring the next five goals to open up a 6-1 advantage at the end of the first period. Zach Schreck netted back-to-back goals while Magnan tallied again, and handed out an assist to lead the charge.

The Red Devils saw some life to open the second period, scoring three straight to cut the deficit to 6-4, with 9:48 to play in the first half. Senior Brian Gleason (Darien, Conn./Darien) started things off with an assist from sophomore Chris Menard (South Hadley, Mass./South Hadley), just 50 seconds into the third.

Sophomore Rob Kendall (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) found the net, off a feed from long pole defender Draper Donley (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's), and junior Brett Parker (Baltimore, Md./St. Paul's) ripped a shot into the corner of the net.

Mangan stalled the run, scoring off an assist from Don Finn, with 8:54 to play in the quarter. Gleason answered just under a minute later, but Magnan would counter with back-to-back scores to give Montclair a 9-5 advantage, with 2:45 on the clock.

The Red Devils cut the margin to three, to close out the half as George Mazarakis (Montclair, N.J./Kent) found fellow Montclair native, Will Trevenen (Montclair, N.J./Taft) to make the score 9-6 at the break.

The scoring was even over the final two quarters as the teams traded three goals in the third quarter, and each tallied twice in the final 15 minutes.

Menard made the score, 9-7, scoring an extra-man goal off an assist from Kendall with 10:48 remaining in the third. Scott added a pair of assists in the third quarter, finding Tyler White (Philadelphia, Pa./Penn Charter) and Brian Cannon (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola Blakefield) to match scores from MSU's Michael Schreck and Shane Raymond.

Schreck closed out the quarter, and scored another early in the fourth to put Montclair in front, 13-9, with 13:45 remaining in the contest. Dickinson answered that goal almost immediately as senior Carter Moore (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) won the face-off and fed Gleason at the 13:38 mark, to make the score, 13-10.

Mangan scored off another assist from Finn before Cannon closed out the scoring with an extra-man goal, off an assist from Menard.

Schreck finished with a hat-trick while Connor Cunningham added three assists to go with the 5-1 day for Magan. Senior goaltender Michael Dorn turned in a great performance in the nets, making 20 saves for the Red Hawks as they improve to 3-0 on the season.

Gleason tallied four goals while Scott finished with three assists on the day. Moore turned in a solid performance, winning a school-record, 22 of 29 face-offs and controlling a school record 19 ground balls.

Senior Max Pawk (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley Academy) made seven saves in the first half while Palmer Murray (Baltimore, Md./Gilman) made a pair in the second. Donley anchored the defensive effort with four caused turnovers and four ground balls.

The Red Devils slip to 2-2 on the season. They are on the road next weekend, traveling to #13-ranked Roanoke College next Saturday for a 2:00 pm face-off.
