Colgate Nips Bucknell on Late Goal by Kevin Adams

HAMILTON Balanced scoring provided a needed result as Colgate held off Bucknell 9-8 Saturday afternoon at Andy Kerr Stadium.

Kevin Adams scored Colgate's first and last goals of the day, the final one coming with 4:26 remaining to break an 8-8 tie. The Raiders were able to hold off the Bison and even their Patriot League record at 1-1.

Ryan Walsh and Brendon McCann also tallied a pair of goals each for the winners. Walsh chipped in two assists to go with his 35th consecutive game scoring a goal, which extends his nation's best streak.

Bucknell notched the opening goals of both halves to take one-goal leads. But Colgate regained the lead in the third quarter when freshmen Danny LaCrosse and Will Mette scored within a two-minute stretch. Eric Foote added a goal that made it 7-5 Raiders with 4:22 showing in the third.

But the Bison answered by scoring three of the next four to it at 8-all with 6:50 to play, setting the stage for Adams' second of the game and then nearly 4½ minutes of timely defense down the stretch.

The Raiders picked up 21 ground balls to 18 for Bucknell, while the Bison claimed a 32-27 edge in shots. Colgate's Alex Kinnealey again prevailed in the faceoff-X, winning 12 of the 19 draws and picking up eight ground balls. Turnovers were even at 10 apiece

The Raiders improved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference, while Bucknell is now 2-2 and 1-1.

HAMILTON, N.Y. -- Kevin Adams scored the tiebreaking goal with 4:26 remaining to lift Colgate to a 9-8 win over Bucknell in a Patriot League men's lacrosse match-up Saturday afternoon at frigid Andy Kerr Stadium.

Todd Heritage scored three times, including the 100th goal of his career, and Sean Doyle tallied two goals and two assists for the Bison, who fell to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the Patriot League.

Ryan Walsh recorded two goals and two assists for the Raiders (3-1, 1-1), who bounced back after falling to Lafayette last week.

Heritage hit the century mark with a man-up goal off a feed from David Dickson just under five minutes into the contest. Colgate struck back with three straight goals, and the Bison seemed to be fighting from behind the rest of the way.

Twice Bucknell bounced back from two-goal deficits, but the Raiders had answers both times. Goals from Heritage and Kyle Shanahan early in the second quarter knotted the game at 3-3. Colgate back up on a score by Walsh, but Bucknell's Alex Ryan found the net to make it a 4-4 game at the half.

The Bison took a brief 5-4 lead on Doyle's unassisted tally to start the third period, but the Raiders pieced together their second 3-0 run of the day to surge back in front.

Bucknell trailed 8-6 inside 12 minutes to play, but Heritage scored with 11:40 left and Doyle made it 8-8 with the team's third EMO goal of the day with 6:50 to go.

The Bison won the ensuing faceoff, but Brandon Burke came up with two big saves for the Raiders. After a Bison turnover, Adams scored off a feed from Eric Foote to put Colgate back in front 9-8.

The Bison had a good opportunity to tie it when Colgate took a late tripping penalty, but Burke made another save and Heritage hit the goalpost with 2:16 remaining. Colgate regained possession after a Bucknell turnover with a minute to play. Jackson Place stole the ball back for Bucknell with 11 seconds left, but the Bison did not have time to get a shot off before the clock expired.
