Catawba Runs by Brevard for SAC Victory

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba claimed a win in its initial South Atlantic Conference lacrosse game, grabbing a 17-6 victory over visiting Brevard on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium. The win improves the Catawba Indians to 1-3 overall and 1-0 in the SAC, while the Tornados fall to 2-3 and 0-1.

John Scheich (Waxhaw, NC/Weddington HS) led Catawba with five goals and five assists as the Indians rally back after a slow start. Tate Beason (Cary, NC/E. Chapel Hill HS) added three goals with Steven Ridolfo (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS/Gettysburg) and Tyler Ulrich (Ephrata, PA/Ephrata HS) each scoring a pair.

Al Blackmon (Easton, PA) scored three goals with an assist for Brevard. Matthew Dropuljic (Brampton, Ontario, CANADA) added two goals, while Blair Alexandersen (Cleveland, OH) had a goal and two assists. Andrew Reilly (Delmar, NY) was tested in goal and made 21 saves as Catawba fired off 56 shots.

The Tornados opened up with the first two goals. Alexandersen tallied at the 9:33 mark and Blackman added the second with 5:24 left in the opening quarter. Catawba scored a pair of goals 46 seconds apart as Jon Williams (Hillsborough, NC/Northern HS) got the Indians even with three minutes to go in the quarter. Ridolfo put Catawba on top just inside a minute left in the first.

Blackman made it 3-3 early in the second quarter before Catawba reeled off seven straight goals. Scheich started the run midway through the second and capped it with two straight in the third quarter to give the Indians a 10-3 edge. Beason tallied all three of his goals in the fourth quarter as Catawba continued to pull away.

Catawba travels to Wingate for another league game on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.

SALISBURY, N.C.- Brevard (2-3, 0-1 SAC) faced off in their first South Atlantic Conference game losing 17-6 while visiting Catawba (1-3, 1-0 SAC) on March 1st at Shuford Stadium.

Stepping into the second quarter, Brevard trailed Catawba by one goal but BC's Alsharif Blackman quickly found the back of the net after winning the faceoff against Indians Tyler Ulrich. Ryan Taylor grabbed the groundball and passed it back up to Blackman for the quickly executed goal, tying the game 3-3 at the 14:29 mark.

Catawba kept control of the game gaining their largest lead in the fourth quarter when they posted six goals. The Indians John Scheich contributed two of his five goals during the last quarter.

Blair Alexandersen skipped in the first goal of the game during the 9:33 mark of the first quarter after Blackman picked up a groundball from Mathew Dropuljic's deflected shot. Alsharif Blackman led the Tornados with three goals and one assist while Brevard's Mathew Dropuljic added two goals.

Andrew Reilly saved 21 of the 56 shots he was faced with while in goal for the Tornados. This is a new season high for the Delmar, N.Y. native.

Brevard will face the Crusaders of Belmont Abbey on March 5th at 3:30 p.m.
