Gannon Drops Season Opener at Saint Leo

ST. LEO, Fla. - Saint Leo scored the final five goals of the match and handed Gannon a 10-6 setback during the Lady Knights' season opener Sunday afternoon.

Trailing 6-5, St. Leo's held Gannon scoreless for the final 17:37 while finding the back of the net five times. Kelsey Burns scored the game-tying and go-ahead goals less than three minutes apart midway through the second half. Three more goals by Joanna Chadwick, Andrea Kuhl and Alex Murray iced the victory.

Neither team was able to produce a multiple-goal lead for the first 48 minutes and 44 seconds. The match featured ties at one, two, three, four, five and six. The two squads battled to a 4-4 deadlock at halftime.

Kimberly Neagle (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) led the Gannon offensive unit with three goals and one assist. Stevie Lombardoni (Mexico, N.Y./Mexico) added a pair of scores. Christie Valentine (Friendship, Md./Annapolis Area Christian) completed the scoring with one goal.

Tessa Mitchell (Rush, N.Y./Rush Henrietta) recorded two of Gannon's three assists during her collegiate debut. Margaret Maslyn (Penn Yan, N.Y./Penn Yan Academy) turned away 10 shots between the pipes.

Gannon, listed among others receiving votes in the latest Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Top 15 Poll, dropped to 0-1 while St. Leo improved to 2-1. The Lady Knights continue their spring trip Tuesday, March 4 at No. 10 Florida Southern. The match is scheduled for 11:00 a.m.
