No. 14 Simon Fraser Pulls Away to Shut Down No. 12 Oregon

BURNABY, BC (March 2, 2014) After giving up a 3-0 lead to sit tied 3-3 at the end of the first quarter, No. 14 Simon Fraser outscored No. 12 Oregon 12-2 the rest of the way, handing the Ducks their worst loss of the season in what was a convincing win for the 4-1 Clan, who now take sole possession of the top spot in the PNCLL standings.

In what has been an understated storyline to start the season, Fraser's starting defensive unit, led by seniors, long stick midfielder Riley Wanzer (Mukilteo, WA/Kamiak) and goaltender Darren Zwack (Sherwood Park, AB/Archbishop Jordan), along with juniors Bayne Bosquet (Coldstream, BC/Kalamalka), Mark Hilker (Bowmanville, ON/Clarington Central), and sophomore Alex Thomson (Coquitlam, BC/Gleneagle), held Oregon to just two goals at even strength and only a single goal in the second half to shut the door on a traditionally strong Ducks offense, improving the Clan's goals-against-average to 7 goals per-game in 2014.

Zwack backstopped SFU with an incredible 19 save performance for a .792 save percentage, improving his season average to an impressive 0.697 on the year. The Clan's defense also continued to make an impact on the scoreboard with Bosquet and Hilker each recording an assist in the win. Long poles Bosquet - 2a, Hilker - 1g, 2a, Thomson - 1g, and Wanzer - 2g have now combined for 8 points over Simon Fraser's first 5 games.

Offensively, the Clan continued to show off their well-balanced fire power with ten different players registering points. Midfielder Sam Clare (Ladner, BC/Vancouver College) - 4g, was joined by attackmen Tyler Kirby (Burnaby, BC/Burnaby South) - 4g, 1a and Lyndon Knuttila (Maple Ridge, BC/Thomas Haney) - 4g, who each scored 4 goals to command the Fraser assault, while junior attackman Ward Spencer (Saskatoon, SK/Evan Hardy Collegiate) added 3 points, with 2 goals and an assist.

Clare opened the scoring on an SFU man-up, followed by Spencer, and then Clare again, to race out to an early 3-0 lead. Junior attackman Michael Weller (San Diego, CA/Patrick Henry) got Oregon on the board at 3-1, assisted by senior midfielder Matt Samet (Petaluma, CA/Casa Grande). Clan penalties then opened the door for the Ducks, as UO scored consecutive goals by attackmen, sophomore Brandon Blackmore (Lake Oswego, OR/Lakeridge) and freshman Jeff Snyder (Pleasanton, CA/Amador Valley), both capitalizing with the man advantage, to even the game at 3-3 after 15:00 minutes.

SFU junior midfielder Casey Foster (Edmonton, AB/St. Francis Xavier) put Fraser back in front by a score of 4-3, kick starting another 3-0 run for the Clan with supporting goals by Knuttila, assisted by sophomore midfielder Jordan Lashar (Burnaby, BC/Burnaby South), and then Kirkby, assisted by senior midfielder Brendan Farrell (Milton, ON/St. Michael's College), to extend the SFU lead back to three at 6-3. Preventing the Clan from pulling away, penalties would continue to keep Oregon in the match-up as Snyder scored again with UO up by a man to close the gap to two at 6-4 heading into the intermission.

With their emotions in check, the second half would be all SFU, starting with a dominant 5-0 third quarter by the Clan. Wanzer hit Bosquet down field, who then found Spencer on the fast break to start a 9-1 onslaught for the Clan over the final 30:00 minutes. Knuttila, from Kirkby, on the man-up doubled up Oregon at 8-4, followed by Clare, then Knuttila's hat trick goal to put Fraser ahead by six at 10-4. SFU would add another goal in transition, this time with Hilker finding Kirkby, to lead 11-4 with one period left to play.
