Blasco Nets Five as Saint Joseph's Defeats Monmouth

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - Monmouth, in its men's lacrosse home debut at Monmouth Stadium, fell to Saint Joseph's 11-6 on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action. Monmouth, now 0-3 in its inaugural season, got a goal and assist from freshman Eric Berger (Ardsley, Pa./Penn Charter) in the defeat.

"Saint Joseph's played a very good game today," stated Monmouth head coach Brian Fisher. "I felt that even when we were in position in the first quarter to make plays, they made some really good ones and got some easy goals. It felt like every mistake we made, they cashed in on."

"I am very proud of our guys and our effort," added Fisher. "We could have very easily put our heads down but I think we stayed in the fight, and from the second quarter on took the game to them and never let them get comfortable. We'll get back to work tomorrow and we'll get ready for Rutgers under lights on Saturday."

SJU (3-2), which led 5-0 at the end of the first, highlighted by three straight goals from Matt Blasco, netted the first eight scores of the game to lead 8-0 with 10:15 left in the half. In the run, Blasco scored four goals, while Mike Dougherty added a goal and two assists.

With 9:11 left in the second quarter, Monmouth broke through, as freshman Tyler Keen (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown West) scored his third career goal, which started a three-goal spurt for the Blue & White. The Hawks' next tally came at 7:16 as Berger netted his second career goal, unassisted, while junior Ryan Horsch ( Freehold, N.J./Freehold/Brookdale C.C.) notched his first career goal with eight seconds showing, to get Monmouth within 8-3 at the intermission.

SJU answered Monmouth's three scores with a three-goal third period to haul in an 11-3 advantage through three quarters.

In the fourth quarter, the Blue & White responded with the only scores, as the Hawks netted three goals to climb within 11-6. With 12:27 left, freshman Tim Kemner (Woolwich, N.J./Kingsway Regional) scored his second career goal, while classmate Chris Daly (Wynnewood, Pa./Lower Merion) registered his team-leading fourth goal for the Hawks with 8:40 showing. Freshman Dan Bloodgood (Jackson, N.J./Freehold Township) got Monmouth within five scores with 27 seconds remaining, off a feed from Berger, to notch his fourth goal of the year as well.

Saint Joseph's out shot Monmouth 43-22, and doubled up MU in groundballs (32-16).

Freshman Nick Hreshko (Warrington, Pa./La Salle College H.S.) made six saves in goal for the Hawks in the opening 30 minutes, while junior Garrett Conaway (Marriottsville, Md./Liberty/Essex-Howard C.C.) made eight stops in the second half.

Monmouth returns to action on Saturday, March 8 when the Hawks travel to Rutgers for a 6:00 p.m. contest with the Scarlet Knights at High Point Solutions Stadium.
