Wood Leads Mercy to Victory over American International

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 4, 2014) Junior Jesse Wood (Binghamton, N.Y./Seton Catholic Central) turned in a top performance as Mercy rode another dominant first half to a 12-6 victory over American International on Tuesday afternoon. Mercy is now 3-1 overall, while AIC drops to 0-3.

Wood once again got the Mavericks started with an early goal and bookended the first quarter with another as Mercy jumped out to a 4-0 lead. He then tallied four assists in the second quarter as the Mavericks extended the lead to eight by halftime at 9-1.

The Yellow Jackets posted a 3-0 advantage in the third quarter, with their first two scores coming on man-up opportunities, and got another man-up goal with just 45 seconds remaining in the game as Mercy held on for a third decisive victory.

Wood notched his third hat trick of the season with three goals on another efficient shot-on-goal percentage (.857) and added a season-high six assists while also grabbing a game-high 10 ground balls and causing his fifth turnover of the spring. Graduate student Kevin Glueckert (Bethpage, N.Y./Univ. at Albany) went an impressive 12 of 15 on faceoffs and picked up six ground balls while junior Zack Haun (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) and sophomore Kyle Stockton (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) each tallied three points, with Haun's coming on a hat trick. Glueckert, sophomore Thomas Lackaye (Summit, N.J./Summit) and freshmen Richie Morris (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) and Nick Wilcox (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg) scored the Mavericks' other four goals.

On the defensive side, sophomore Danny Chillianis (Bethpage, N.Y./Bethpage) and junior Owen Krezmien (Buffalo, N.Y./Canisius College) turned in another pair of elite performances, combining for nine ground balls and teaming with graduate student Matthew Carrello (Bethpage, N.Y./Univ. at Albany) to cause six turnovers, led by Chillianis' three. Sophomore A.J. Pellati (West Islip, N.Y./West Islip) stepped up in the cage, stopping 11 shots while allowing just six goals.
