Tampa Edges Newberry to Keep Wolves Winless

TAMPA, Fla. - Senior KerriAnn Barlage netted five goals in Newberry's 11-9 loss at Naimoli Family Stadium to the Tampa Spartans on Tuesday evening.

After falling behind in the opening five minutes, the Wolves (0-4) notched their first goal of the night when Barlage (Glen Burnie, Md.) scored off a free position with 24:20 left in the opening period. The Spartans (1-3) quickly answered with a goal a minute later to take a 2-1 lead.

Tampa's one-goal advantage was not enough for the Spartans as the home side scored eight straight goals to close out a 9-1 Tampa lead heading into halftime.

The second period opened the same way the first half ended as the Spartans scored back-to-back goals in the opening six minutes to take an 11-1 lead over the Wolves.

Newberry did everything in its power to comeback from the 10-goal deficit as sophomore Alexis Cathcart (Spartanburg, S.C.) corralled a pass from senior Kayla Hopper (Newberry, S.C.) and netted the second goal of the evening for the Wolves.

Cathcart scored a second two minutes later with the Wolves down a player, to bring the score to 11-3. Barlage posted her second goal of the game with 18:47 left in regulation, forcing a Tampa timeout.

Junior Megan Kenny (Mauldin, S.C.) got in on the scoring with the fifth Newberry goal of the night at 13:54.

After nearly five scoreless minutes the Wolves cut the deficit to 11-6 as Kenny assisted on a goal by sophomore Jessica Baxtrom (St. Leonard, Md.).

The Wolves began to run out of time for their comeback as over five minutes expired before Barlage scored on a man-up opportunity for the Wolves. Barlage continued to assault the net as she scored Newberry's eighth goal of the evening less than a minute later.

With 17 seconds left, Barlage scored off an assist from Baxtrom to give Newberry its ninth goal of the game.

Hopper corralled the following draw, but time expired on Newberry's comeback, with the Spartans topping Newberry 11-9.

Barlage's five goals led the Wolves, while Cathcart, Kenny and Baxtrom each finished with multiple points on the evening. Freshman Katie Thompson (Newark, Del.) and sophomore goalkeeper Morgan Raffaele (Hilton Head Island, S.C.) each finished with four ground balls.

The Wolves were led around the circle by junior Victoria Thomas' (Manhattan, Kan.) three draw controls.

Newberry continues its spring break trip to the Sunshine State on Thursday with a 10:00 a.m. first draw at No. 11 Florida Southern.
