Second-Half Surge Sends Kean Past Manhattanville

UNION, N.J. Kean outscored Manhattanville by an 11-2 margin over the final 30 minutes to blow open a close contest and pick up a 16-6 victory over the Valiants in non-conference lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Stadium.

The Cougars' Meghan Schneck led all scorers with five points on two goals and three assists. Ciara Mastrodomenico, Maggie Brocklebank and Jordan Blanda all had three goals as well for Kean (2-0), while Samantha Gnapp had two goals and an assist.

Junior Mallory Bakst (Morganville, N.J./Marlboro) led Manhattanville (2-0) with two goals, while four other Valiants had one tally each on the day.

Senior co-captain Casandra Honovich (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y./Walter Panas) got the game started nicely with a free-position score for the visitors, but Kean came back with four goals in a row to take a 4-1 lead with 11 minutes gone by in the opening half.

Manhattanville remained in the game, however, scoring three of the next four goals. Junior Saba Naji (Lewiston, Maine/Lewiston) made it a 4-2 game with an eight-meter score, and back-to-back goals by Brocklebank and Valiant freshman Sarah Dalsey (Ocean City, N.J./Ocean City) kept it a two-goal lead at the midway point of the half. The visitors got back within one when Bakst forced a bad clearance by Kean keeper Daniella Wagenti, and it was intercepted and put into an empty net by freshman Lauren Cassidy (Oceanside, N.Y./Oceanside) for the first goal of her career.

The two teams focused on defense for the remainder of the frame, as neither team could find the back of the net over the final 12 minutes to keep the score 5-4 at the half. The Valiants were dealt a tough blow with less than 8:00 left in the clock, however, when Honovich was assessed her second yellow card of the game to send her off and severely limit the Valiants offensively for the remainder of the contest.

Heading into the second half, Kean came out of the gates firing, scoring six straight goals to open up an 11-4 lead with 20 minutes remaining. Bakst ended the run from the eight-meter line two minutes later, but the Cougars scored two in a row to cut off any Valiant momentum.

After a relatively even first half, Kean out-shot Manhattanville by a 20-7 margin in the second half to help secure the victory. Junior Kirsten Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn./LeSueur-Henderson St. Peter) turned aside nine shots in a losing effort for the Valiants, while Wagenti had five saves for Kean to earn the win.

Manhattanville will return to GoValiants.com Field on Saturday afternoon, as the Valiants host Farmingdale State in a non-conference match-up starting at 1:00 p.m. The live GoValiants.TV broadcast will begin at approximately 12:55 p.m.
