St. Andrews Edges Tennessee Wesleyan on Late Goal

LAURINBURG, N.C.- Senior midfielder Chris Michela scored the game-winning goal with 3 minutes to go to give the St. Andrews lacrosse team their first win of the season by a score of 9-8 over conference rival Tennessee Wesleyan on Tuesday afternoon at Knights Field.

TWC came in to the game undefeated at 5-0 and coming off a big win over fellow conference foe SCAD-Savannah. However, it was not to be on this day as the Knights came out fired up and quickly jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first quarter. St. Andrews would then continue to methodically use their defense to hold the Bulldogs scoreless through the rest of the half with a 3-0 lead at the break.

After a low-scoring 2nd quarter both teams came out on the offensive as they combined to score ten goals in the third quarter alone. However, when TWC cut SAU's lead to 6-5 near the end of the third, St. Andrews would not quit and tallied on two more to lead 8-5 heading into the fourth quarter. Unfortunately, penalties and turnovers would help the Bulldogs come back to tie the game at 8 with 4 minutes to go until St. Andrews made a big defensive stand to get back on the offense and have enough time to close the game out with Michela's goal.

Sophomore attack Jason Wilson (SO, Hershey, PA) led the Knights with 2 goals and one assist for 3 points while midfielder Connor Cather (SO, Poulsbo, WA) and Michela also scored two goals. Nolan Gilmour (SO, Portland, OR), Cha'Sed Miller (SO, Lexington, KY), and Bryson Palmer (SO, Simpsonville, SC) also scored for St. Andrews on the day. Miller led with 6 ground balls as well.

Michela and Wilson now lead the team with 10 goals apiece.

First-year head coach Joe Wilson will next lead his Knights back into action on Friday in the first game of a three game road trip down in Florida. SAU will first play at Florida Gulf Coast University (3-1) in Fort Myers, Fla. at 7:00 pm Friday night before playing the US Coast Guard Academy (Conn.) in a neutral site game on Sunday.
