Belmont Abbey Cruises Past Lake Erie to Go 4-0

Belmont Abbey scored 10 first-half goals and added seven more in the second, as the Crusaders cruised to an easy 17-5 victory over Lake Erie this afternoon at Alumni Field.

The victory gives Belmont Abbey its first 4-0 start in the eight year history of the program, bettering the previous best of 3-0, set last year. Lake Erie, which fielded only ten players (two shy of the maximum) and no substitutes, falls to 0-2.

Belmont Abbey controlled the contest from the start, bolting out to a 5-1 lead in the first 7:04.

After the Storm netted two straigth to cut the lead to 5-3, Belmont Abbey unleashed an 8-0 run to move ahead 13-3. The Crusaders scored the final five goals of the first half and continued its momentum by scoring the first three in the second half. The first three second half goals came in the opening 2:46.

The Crusaders outscored the Storm 7-2 in the final period, most of which was played with a running clock due to the ten goal lead.

Katy Connery and Kassie Easter led the Crusaders with four goals each. Molly Schaefer added a pair while Katelin Glass Shanin Darley, Gina Colella, MacKenzie Miller, Jordan Hofmeister, Ariel Walker and Megan Patterson all had one.

Schaefer won four draw controls and scooped up six ground balls.

Darley totaled four assists and two caused turnovers. Connery, the Conference Carolinas leader in ground balls, scooped up eight while winning four draw controls and causing a pair of turnovers.

Nathasha Whitman stopped seven shots in the cage, including all six of the Storm's free positon shots.
