Schlagenhauf Nets 7 as Mercyhurst Routs Roberts Wesleyan

ERIE, Pa.- Mercyhurst beat Roberts Wesleyan, 19-1, to open the 2014 season Thursday. Jenna Schlagenhauf recorded seven goals and three assists to lead the Lakers at a chilly Tullio Field.

Mercyhurst had its attack going from the start, scoring four times in the first 2:40 of action. Anna LeGrett ignited the offense, assisting on goals by Becca Himes and Regan Kaestner. Mackenzie Jordan followed with a goal from Schlagenhauf. Himes capped the early run with a free position goal.

Schlagenhauf then scored twice to give Mercyhurst a 6-0 advantage with 16:20 remaining in the period. Janelle Williams scored a shorthanded goal and then Schlagenhauf assisted on a Shannen Drennon goal. Himes found Schlagenhauf for a 10-0 lead with 2:54 showing on the clock. RWC scored with 1:38 to go, sending the game into halftime with the Lakers ahead, 10-1.

Taylor Ventre assisted on another Schlagenhauf score 49 seconds into the second half. The duo switched roles two minutes later as the hosts grabbed a 12-1 advantage. Williams converted a free position shot and then Schlagenhauf scored two more goals. Emily Gebhardt, Joelle Scott, Olivia Keirn, and Amanda Slavin each scored to close out the match.

Schlagenhauf led with seven goals and three assists in her first game as a Laker. Himes posted two goals and four assists, while Jordan tallied a goal and two helpers. Williams scored twice. LeGrett dished out two assists, while Ventre had a goal and an assist. Rebecca Muscella made five saves in net, while Kyra Maludy registered three saves in relief.

The one goal allowed is the fewest by a Laker squad since April 28, 2008, when Mercyhurst won, 21-1, at Slippery Rock. It's the fewest goals given up at Tullio Field since March 26, 2002, when the Lakers defeated Indiana (Pa.), 12-1.

Mercyhurst is 1-0 this season. It travels to #2 Le Moyne on Monday, March 10.
