Centenary Second-Half Rally Falls Short st Old Westbury

PATCHOGUE, N.Y.. - Centenary nearly rallied from a four-goal, second-half deficit but came up one goal shy of the equalizer, falling 9-8 at Old Westbury in non-conference action at Danzi Field Thursday night.

The teams traded goals during the opening 30 minutes, with neither squad leading by more than one.

Sophomore Carlie Schmitt (Stewartstown, Pa./Kennard-Dale) netted the Cyclones' first two goals, but Old Westbury took the lead 4-3 at the 5:43 mark following Gabrielle DiPierno's tally.

The Cyclones knotted the game at 4-4 just before the half when sophomore Devin Sutko (Cinnaminson, N.J./Cinnaminson) fired home her second goal of the season.

The Panthers held Centenary scoreless during the first 20 minutes of the second stanza and took advantage of the Cyclones' drought, scoring four times to grab an 8-4 edge.

Freshman Abby Voelkner (Denville, N.J./Morris Knolls) netted goals 1:30 apart to slice the Panthers' lead in half. Voelkner then assisted on Schmitt's third tally of the game before adding a goal with 1:15 to play that brought Centenary within one.

Despite forcing a pair of turnovers during the final 30 seconds, the Cyclones could not muster the game-tying goal.

Voelkner finished with five points (4G, 1A) and added four caused turnovers and four ground balls, while Schmitt turned in a four-point performance (3G, 1A). Sophomore defender Kristen Rabenstein (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) collected six caused turnovers and five ground balls.

Maria Dischley's two goals and two assists helped Old Westbury even its record at 1-1. Goalkeeper Jackie Cartagena made 10 stops in net.

Centenary looks to get on the winning track Saturday when it visits Wesley (Del.) at 4:00 pm.
