Puget Sound Drops Tough Game to Kenyon

TACOMA, Wash.-The Puget Sound lacrosse squad saw its first close game of the season Friday night, falling to opponent Kenyon by a 17-13 margin on Lower Baker Field in Tacoma, Wash.

Kenyon got on the board first, scoring a goal 1:04 into the match to take an early lead. The Loggers netted four of the next five goals, however, to take a 4-2 advantage after 12 minutes of action. Olivia Keene scored two of those goals, the Loggers' first of the night at the 26:51 mark and their fourth at the 18:18 mark of the half.

The visiting Ladies netted the next three to take a brief 5-4 advantage, but Caroline Cook scored two within 14 seconds to take the lead right back. Kenyon scored two in a row after Cook's outburst, but Kerri Smith and Keene netted two more in the span of 14 seconds to give Puget Sound another lead. With the score tied at eight apiece, Maddie Soukup scored a man-up goal with 35 seconds remaining in the half to give the Loggers a 9-8 advantage going into the break.

Coming out of halftime, Kenyon again scored within the first two minutes to tie the game at nine. Smith answered back with a goal just 20 seconds later than Morgan's, and Cook again scored two in a row to give the Loggers a 12-10 advantage.

The visitors from Gambier, Ohio rallied with two straight to the contest at 12, however. Keene added her fourth of the night to give the Loggers another lead at 13-12, but the Logger offense couldn't manage anymore goals while Kenyon scored five times in the final 12 minutes to steal a 17-13 victory.

Both Keene and Cook scored four goals apiece for the Loggers, and Smith tallied two assists on the night as well. Kenyon's Alex Bair led all players with six goals and seven total points, while Cook picked up 12 draw controls for the Loggers, the most in the game. Elena Becker tallied five ground balls for the Loggers, and both she and Keene caused two Kenyon turnovers. Bair led the Ladies in both categories, picking up eight ground balls and causing five turnovers.

The Loggers (3-2) will wrap up their first homestand of the season Sunday, March 9 when they host Colorado College. First draw for that game will be at 1:00 p.m. on Peyton Field.
