No. 16 Westminster Runs by Utah State

SALT LAKE CITY The 16th-ranked Westminster College women's lacrosse team cruised to a 20-5 win over Utah State in the home opener at Dumke Field on Saturday afternoon.

Westminster improves to 3-2 overall this season with the win. The loss drops Utah State to 2-2.

The Griffins scored the first five goals of the game and never looked back. After USU cut the deficit to 6-2 with 19:04 left in the first half, Westminster scored the next 13 goals of the game to lead 19-2 with 12:20 to play in the game.

Dana Barraco, Kira Heiden and Maggie HerrNeckar all scored four goals for the Griffins. Kaely Kernan added three goals with Abby Sebastian and Maddie Haynes scoring twice. Haynes also recorded four assists to lead the team with six points. She would also dominate with nine draw controls. Makenzie Hekking made three saves in cage for the Griffins.

Westminster had a 30-11 edge in total shots with 27 of those attempts on cage. They claimed 20 of the game's 25 draw controls and went 4 of 7 in free-position shots. The Griffins were successful on 10 of their 11 clearing attempts while holding Utah State to 7 of 14.

Five different players scored for the Aggies with Jenessa Woods leading the team with three shots. Mikayla Swan made seven saves in goal.

The Griffins will return to action on March 15 when they travel to Orem, Utah for a game against Utah Valley.
