Corace Sparks 2nd-Half Surge as Catawba Wins at Wingate

Wingate, N.C.---Catawba started the second half with three consecutive goals, breaking a 5-5 halftime tie en route to a 10-8 South Atlantic Conference victory over Wingate Saturday afternoon at the Irwin Belk Track Complex turf field on the Wingate campus. Sophomore attack Alyssa Corace (Mahopac, N.Y.) led the visiting Indians with three goals and one assist.

Catawba evens its 2014 ledger at 3-3 overall. The Indians are 2-0 in the SAC. The Wingate Bulldogs fall to 1-2 overall and 0-2 in the SAC. Both teams resume SAC play Saturday, March 15. Wingate visits Brevard (12:00 p.m.), while Catawba travels to Newberry (2:00 p.m.).

Three Catawba players had two goals each: sophomore attack Meredith Jones (Barnesville, Md.), senior midfield Ebony Mills (Harrison, Maine) and freshman midfield Nicolette Salay (Columbus, N.J.). Mills and Salay added one assist each. The Indians outshot the Bulldogs 28-14 Saturday afternoon.

For Wingate, freshman attack Kaelin Evans (San Marcos, Calif.) had a season-high three goals. Freshman midfield Laura Swanson (Plantation, Fla.) had two goals for the Bulldogs, while freshman midfield/defense Cydnie DeComo (Glen Burnie, Md.), freshman midfield Logan Bounds (Salisbury, Md.) and freshman attack Allie Holland (Ocala, Fla.) had one goal each.

Swanson (26:09) and Evans (24:18) scored the first two goals of the contest to give the hosts an early lead. Catawba responded with five unanswered goals to take a 5-2 lead on a Jones tally with 13:35 remaining in the opening frame.

Wingate finished the first half with three straight scores to tie the game 5-5 at intermission. DeComo started the flurry (12:40), while Evans (10:57) and Bounds (2:19) completed the first half scoring. Both Wingate's Evans and Catawba's Jones had two goals each in the first half.

Corace scored the game-winner, opening the second half scoring with 27:22 remaining in the contest. She scored again five minutes later on an assist from Mills. Salay put the exclamation point on the aforementioned 3-0 run with an unassisted tally at the 18:45 mark.

The Bulldogs did not fold the tents, cutting the deficit to 8-7 on unassisted goals by Evans (16:01) and Holland (14:05). Salay had a hand in the next two Catawba goals. She assisted Mills on the team's ninth goal at the 10:30 mark. Salay took a pass from Corace and tallied the Indians' 10th goal at the 8:05 plateau. Wingate's Swanson wrapped up the scoring on an assist from Bounds with 4:45 to play.

Catawba sophomore goalie Bethany Davis (Salisbury, Md.) earned the victory. In 60 minutes, Davis faced 14 shots and recorded three saves. She allowed eight goals. Bulldog freshman goalie Jayda Lynch (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) also played 60 minutes. She gave up 10 goals, while posting 12 saves.

WINGATE, NC -- Catawba got three goals from Ebony Mills (Harrison, ME/Oxford Hills HS/Mount Ida) and grabbed a 10-8 victory over host Wingate in South Atlantic Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Irwin Belk Track Complex turf field. The Catawba Indians even their overall mark at 3-3 and improve to 2-0 in the SAC. The Bulldogs fall to 1-2 and 0-2.

Wingate scored the first two goals, but Catawba came back on goals from Alyssa Corace (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac HS), Meredith Jones (Barnesville, MD/St. John's Catholic HS) and Kim McConnery (Welland, Ontario, CANADA/Notre Dame HS/Monroe CC) to lead 3-2. A goal from Mills and a second from Jones pushed the lead to 5-2 midway through the first half.

The Bulldogs rallied back to pull even by the half. Logan Bounds notched the tying goal with 2:19 left before the break.
