Holy Cross Edges Colgate in Patriot League Opener

WORCESTER, Mass. Senior captain Sara Hennessey (Winchester, Mass.) broke a 9-9 tie with the game-winner with 6:31 left in the second half as Holy Cross defeated Colgate, 10-9, on Saturday afternoon at Holy Cross Field in Worcester, Mass., in the Patriot League opener for both teams. With the win, the Crusaders have won three straight games and advance to 3-4 overall (1-0 PL), while the Raiders fall to 1-5 overall (0-1 PL).

The Crusaders were led by sophomore Margie Smith (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) who scored three goals and junior captain Laura Ryan (Stirling, N.J.) who tallied two goals and two assists for four points. Hennessey posted two goals and one assist for three points, while sophomore Kate Martino (Summit, N.J.) scored two goals and led the team with six draw controls. Colgate was led by Megan Ark who scored three goals.

Colgate scored the first three goals in the first eight minutes to take an early 3-0 lead in the first half. After a Crusader timeout, the team came out fighting. Martino put the Crusaders on the board with 16:21 remaining in the first half. Martino caught a pass from junior Lissie Russert (Cincinnati, Ohio) and fired the ball in from the right side of Raider goalie Jennie Berglin. Smith brought the game within one goal with 15:46 remaining in the first half. Smith was awarded a free position and sent the ball into the back of the net low between the pipe and Berglin's left leg.

The Crusaders tied up the game just 17 seconds later when freshman Avery Giorgio (Madison, Conn.) netted the ball off a pass from Ryan. With 9:30 remaining in half, the Raiders claimed their lead again as Jenna Frost scored the fourth Colgate goal of the game when she netted a goal off a free position. Smith scored her second of the game to tie it up 4-4 with 7:25 remaining in the half. Smith scored unassisted from in front of the net beating Berglin low.

Hennessey gave the Crusaders their first lead of the game, 5-4, with 4:39 remaining in the half. Hennessey caught the ball from Ryan and ran it in sending the ball high into the net on the right side of Berglin. The goal extended her goal-scoring streak to 39 games. Ryan added a goal of her own after she entered the 12-meter arc and switched her hands to favor a left-handed shot. Ryan crossed the eight-meter line to shoot from the right side of Berglin and net the ball past Berglin's left calf and bring the Crusaders ahead 6-4.

Just 20 seconds into the second half, Martino caught the ball from freshman Tess MacKay (Simsbury, Conn.) and from the top of the crease netted her second and the Crusaders' seventh. Colgate scored the next two goals in a matter of two minutes to close the gap to one goal, 7-6. With 21:32 remaining in the second, Lauren Gorajek scored to tie the game 7-7 off a free position. Smith netted her second consecutive hat trick and the second of her career to give the Crusaders an 8-7 lead with 18:02 remaining in the game.

Colgate's Megan Ark tied up the game 8-8 with 14:09 remaining in the game. Ark struck again on a breakaway to bring the Raiders up 9-8 with 10:09 remaining to net her third consecutive hat trick. Ryan scored her second of the game catching a pass from Hennessey and firing it in to the top corner of net above Berglin's left shoulder tying the game 9-9 with 7:53 remaining. Hennessey scored her second of the game charging in scoring the game-winner with an identically placed goal to Ryan's game-tier to bring the Crusaders up 10-9. The Raiders were unable to score the equalizer for the 10-9 final score.
