Lycoming Defeated by Visiting Scranton

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. Senior Matt McCaffer (Marcellus, N.Y./Marcellus) notched the second hat trick of his senior year to lead Lycoming, but Scranton scored the first seven goals of the game en route to a 12-5 non-conference win at the Shangraw Athletic Complex on Saturday afternoon, March 8.

McCaffer finished with three goals and four ground balls to lead the Warriors (0-4 overall), while junior Sean Reilly (Corning, N.Y./Corning-Painted Post West) added a goal and an assist and sophomore Mike Cooper (Riva, Md./Archbishop Spalding) added two helpers. Junior Joe Marchetti (Cortland, N.Y./Homer) added a career-high six ground balls to lead the team, while junior Thomas Hanson (Tucson, Ariz./Catalina Foothills) posted two caused turnovers and a goal in transition. Sophomore James Ahrens (Corning, N.Y./Corning East) also caused two turnovers.

The Royals (2-2 overall) were led by three goals and an assist from Alec Mikrut and two goals each from Ryan Mygatt and Gus Sturm. John Gregitis added a goal and three assists. Both Philip Logerfo and Mike Deliberti picked up five ground balls and Deliberti also caused two turnovers.

The Royals took 20 shots in the first half while holding the Warriors to six, building a seven-goal lead. However, right before halftime Reilly, from behind the net, found McCaffer low and in front of the net to make it 7-1 at the break.

In the third quarter, the Warriors started strong, with Cooper finding McCaffer for a goal before the team fought into a transition situation, with Hanson and Cooper playing catch before Hanson dropped it into the net with 6:14 left, cutting the Royals' lead to 7-3. The Rpyals closed the half with a pair of goals, the last on a man-up situation, and then they added three more in the fourth to take a 12-3 lead before Reilly and McCaffer scored unassisted to close out the game.

The Warriors get back on the field on Wednesday, March 12, when they head to Monroe Community College in Rochester, N.Y., to face SUNY Geneseo at 4:00 p.m., starting a five-game road trek.

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa.-Scranton set the tone early in Saturday's 12-5 victory over Lycoming in non-conference action Saturday afternoon.

Behind two goals apiece from sophomore Alec Mikrut (Belle Mead, NJ/Montgomery) and freshman Ryan Mygatt (Bridgewater, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan), the Royals built up a 7-1 lead by intermission. Scranton out-shot the Warriors, 20-6, and won of 9 of 12 face-offs in the opening 30 minutes of play.

Mikrut finished with three goals and an assist, senior Gus Sturm (Devon, Pa./Conestoga) added two goals, and senior John Gregitis (Wayne, Pa./St. Joseph's Preparatory) had a goal and three assists as the Royals improved to 2-2.

Lycoming, which fell to 0-4, was led by senior Matt McCaffer (Marcellus, NY/Marcellus) with three goals and juniors Sean Reilly (Corning, NY/Corning Painted Post West) and Thomas Hanson (Tucson, Ariz./Catanlina Foothills) added one apiece.

The Royals dominated the game in all phases, winning 17 of 20 face-offs-including a 9 for 12 effort by junior Matt Finor (Churchville, Pa./Council Rock South)-and holding a 39-21 advantage in shots and 38-23 margin in ground balls.

McCaffer and Hanson opened the third period with goals during a two-minute span to cut Scranton's lead to four midway before Scranton closed it out with goals by sophomore Brad Elkin (West Chester, Pa./Malverne Preparatory) and Mikrut on a man-up opportunity to take a 9-3 lead entering the final period of play.

The Royals put it out of reach on goals by Sturm and sophomores Andrew Marone (Morristown, NJ/Seton Hall Preparatory), and Nick Mullery (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) to open the fourth period to extend the lead to nine.

Freshman Brian Quinn (Wantagh, NY/Wantagh) finished with two assists for Scranton, which will return to action this Wednesday, March 12, against Marywood University beginning at 7:00 p.m. at Fitzpatrick Field. Admission is free.
