Colorado Earns First MPSF Win at Fresno State

FRESNO, Calif. --Despite a second half comeback, the Fresno State lacrosse team dropped a conference game to Colorado 12-6 on Saturday afternoon at Bulldog Stadium.

"We won the second half today, but we have to win the whole game," said Fresno State head coach Jessica Pausewang. "That is where we struggled."

Colorado dominated the first 30 minutes of play, opening the game with a 4-0 run which led to a 10-1 lead at halftime.

The Bulldogs then regrouped and came out on fire in the second half, scoring four goals off the bat. Fresno State outscored Colorado 5-2 in the second half, though were unable to comeback from the first half deficit, falling to the Buff 12-6.

The Bulldogs second half charge was backed behind strong play at the draw. Fresno State had an 11-9 draw control advantage over the Buffs, which is a season-best for the 'Dogs. Freshman Kyleigh Westgarth and Caroline Dineen-Carlson led the Bulldogs with four draw controls each. Westgarth and Dineen-Carlson also added one goal each for Fresno State.

"Our goal was to improve on our draw controls in this game, and we won that battle today," said Pausewang. "Kyleigh and Caroline came up huge with four each, it was a team effort to help them."

Senior Kara Concheck scored a team-high three goals, leading the Bulldogs for the second game in a row with a hat trick. Concheck leads the 'Dogs with 11 goals and 12 points after six games.

Sophomore Anjelica Fuccillo also recorded her sixth goal of the season aginst the Buffs and had one assist to finish the game with two points.

In split time in goal, senior Lisa Barnaba had four saves for the Bulldogs while freshman Meganne Weissenfels stopped five of the Buffs 10 shots in the second half.

"I think Colorado is a good team, we need to learn from this as we go into Oregon next week, "added Pausewang.

Fresno State (1-5, 0-3 MPSF) next travels to Eugene, Ore., next week for a pair of road games against Oregon (March 15) and Connecticut (March 16).
