Top-Ranked Le Moyne Cruises to Victory Over Pace

Syracuse, N.Y. Senior attackman Chris Button (Fairport, N.Y./Fairport) recorded six points to lead top-ranked Le Moyne to an 18-4 win over Pace on Saturday afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action at Ted Grant Field.

The Dolphins opened the game with the first seven goals. Following a Pace turnover, senior midfielder Andrew Chadderdon (Auburn, N.Y./Auburn) rifled in a shot from the right side with 12:44 remaining in the first quarter. Off the ensuing faceoff, senior midfielder Kam Bumpus (Marshfield, Mass./Needham/Bridgton Academy) scooped up the ball and fed junior attackman Kevin Kelly (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge), who flipped a pass to Button on the left side of the goal. Button then sent a pass across the crease to sophomore attackman Mike Jenkins (Clifton Park, N.Y./Shenendehowa), who dunked the ball for his fourth goal of the season just six seconds after Chadderdon's goal.

On an extra-man opportunity, junior midfielder Joe Corapi (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) fired a 17-yard shot into the back of the net for his sixth goal of the season after taking a pass from Kelly with 9:36 to go. Just over four minutes later, senior midfielder Mike DeBottis (North Syracuse, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse/Onondaga C.C.) scored from the left edge of the crease in a man-up situation off a feed from Jenkins. Kelly ended the quarter's scoring with 1:39 left after receiving a pass from Button.

Opening second quarter with an extra man, the Dolphins took a 6-0 lead with 14:38 left as Button scored from 10 yards out off a pass from Chadderdon. Button tallied his second goal of the quarter 66 seconds later with a behind-the-back shot off a pass from the goal-line extended by senior midfielder Matt Klepper (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius/Merrimack).

The Setters broke through with 11:31 left in the second quarter as Ryan Valdez sent a pass in front of the goal that hit off of the body of Robert Maddia and bounced into the back of the net.

Le Moyne tallied three goals over the final 8:07 of the quarter to take a 10-1 lead at halftime. Corapi started the run by firing in a 16-yard shot in an extra-man opportunity after taking a feed from behind the goal from DeBottis. With 3:17 remaining, Button scored from the left side of the crease off a pass from the right side by Klepper. Kelly ended the half's scoring by whipping a shot inside the right post from 10 yards out off a pass from Chadderdon.

The Dolphins extended their lead to 14-1 with four goals over the opening 9:34 of the third quarter. After starting with the ball on the left side of the box, Corapi worked his way across the field before rocketing a shot into the back of the net with 11:40 left. Klepper then netted his first goal of the day by sticking a shot inside the left post at the 9:53 mark after working his way from outside the left edge of the box. Almost two and one-half minutes later, Klepper recorded his second goal after running in from the top left corner of the box and blowing past a defender. Kelly and Button connected for the second time in the game with 5:26 left in the third as Kelly scored from the left edge of the crease.

Pace ended Le Moyne's 7-0 run in an extra-man situation as a cutting Matthew Cossidente scored from just off the crease after taking a pass from behind the goal by Matt Gebhardt.

The Dolphins responded with four goals over the final two and one-half minutes of the third quarter and the first four and one-half minutes of the fourth quarter. Sophomore midfielder Nick Kline (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) started the spurt with his first goal of the season with 2:21 left in the third off a pass from behind the net from freshman attackman Alex O'Brien (Hanson, Mass./Boston College High). Just 39 seconds later, Kelly scored from the left side off a pass from sophomore attackman Andrew Jackson (Syracuse, N.Y./Henninger), who received a pass in transition from freshman midfielder Ryan Desmond (Fairfield, Conn./Ludlowe). Junior midfielder Chris Breiner (Troy, N.Y./Trinity-Pawling) gave the Dolphins a 15-goal advantage from the left side at the 14:15 mark. Kline picked up his second goal of the contest with 10:40 left off a pass from DeBottis to complete Le Moyne's scoring.
